A morbid chill insinuated into the insipid body of mortal flesh. A looming shadow of nothing staggered across the vast less space toward the mindless body. The body, a horrified look upon its face, struggles to move and escape. With a silent cry of pure terror, the body could only watch helplessly as the shapeless mass stirred closer. Within a moment, the shade appeared focused and defined, closer. Chilling tendrils shot out from the middle of the creature's form. A spastic chill crept up the limbs as the shadow oozed closer to the face. The dread in the face turned to authentic anxiety as the creature's weightless burden descended onto the helpless victim. Icy fingers crawled up the spine and crept through the nerves. Paralysis took hold and slowly devoured the mind until a thoughtless hush was all that remained. The body screamed and woke, in its bed. 'Nightmare,' she thought, ' just a dream.' She closed her eyes and sighed with relief. A creak in the floorboards sounded outside the room. She squeezed her eyes shut, as if in a silent refusal, never to gaze upon the object of her fear. A cool current of air moved past her face to the back of the neck. Goose bumps rose as the hair raised and poised rigidly as if to make the body appear larger to any opposition. Fear escalated as adrenaline pulsed through veins. A clammy weight descended upon the body in the bed. The unspoken promise evaporated as the eyes opened in surprise. The hovering shadow from the nightmare was what she expected to see. Nothing but darkness was encasing the room. Frightened glances around the room confirmed that she was alone. As the adrenaline ceased and the heart slowed, a movement out of the corner of she eye caught her attention. She slowly turned, startled as the creature untangled itself from the surrounding shadows. All the heat in the room dissipated and the coldness returned to her legs. As the shade came forward her body felt the paralyzing fear from the nightmare, only this time it wasn't a dream.
