Rated : PG
Synopsis: Some thoughts after the end of the film, Serenity.
Misc Notes: This is my first foray into Firefly fandom. But I do have a few other (far longer) stories in the works that will become a series of sorts. I'm a Simon/Kaylee fan so the stories will feature them prominently.
Never Forget
Large drops of water fell relentlessly, pounding the ship with its irritating sound. It had been raining for two straight days. But it didn't matter. Most of the repairs had been completed. It was almost time to leave this world.
Time had passed slowly as the crew of Serenity healed. Their wounds had healed, the ship had been repaired, but the painful memories would linger far after what happened on Miranda was long forgotten.
Zoe ignored the pain by throwing herself into the work necessary to make Serenity space worthy again. She had a duty to her Captain and she refused to let him down.
Mal and Jayne worked with very little said between them; their usual humor and combative banter gone in the wake of the death of two well-loved crewmembers.
River didn't understand and yet understood all too well. She worked within the ship. She became the ship. Spoke to the ship. If Kaylee was Serenity's heart, then River was certainly its mind.
Simon and Kaylee dulled the pain of loss in one another's arms; making love desperately, holding tightly to what shred of happiness they had wrenched from death's cold grip.
Inara watched the emotional struggle rage around her and kept a tight rein on her own fears; lest in the admitting of them would make them true and bind her to an future on which she wasn't entirely sure she was ready to embark.
The 'verse knew the truth now. But that would never dull the pain suffered by the crew of Serenity. They would heal. They would go on. But they would never, never forget the sacrifice made to bring that unbelievable truth to light.
