1To Trust the Pure

prompt 74: oath

She hated the feel of the heavy robes on her skin. They hung with thick but not warm against the low temperatures in the basement rooms. Her hair stood out against the dark walls and robes; it was stark against his white skin. Her hands were concealed by the sleeves of her robes, which were the wrong size and hadn't had a chance to be hemmed. They were shaking, and she could only hope to steady them by the time she would have to reveal them.

"I would like you to know, we do not do this every day," he said, his voice raspy yet flowing.

"I understand, my lord," she replied. She was at least able to keep her voice even. However, she was beginning to doubt the faith that had been stored in her when it came to the mission.

"Such power," he said, "It's really a shame that you were so young in my first days, and in that dreadful country. You would have been of great use."

He paused for a moment, then motioned for one of his followers to step forward.

"I want you to understand," he hissed, "This oath will control your life from this moment on. You must be completely devoted."

She took one last breath, knowing that it was too late to turn back anyway, but also wishing to clear her head and realize what she was doing one last time.

"I understand, my lord."

Her forearm was still aching dully as she sat down in front of the fireplace. After a moment, a familiar head appeared.

"Are you all right?' was the first thing he said.

"I wouldn't know," she replied wearily, "I guess we won't be seeing much of each other for a while."

"We'll manage. Your safety is first priority, though."' he answered.

"Then you entrusted me with the wrong thing," she stated, then forced a tired smile.

"Be careful," he said, "And don't forget the occulmency."

"I'm not a child," she said, "so stop patronizing me."

"I wasn't," he replied, "I love you, Willow. One day this will all be over."

"See you soon," she said, but she couldn't bring herself to repeat his sentiment, not with all the doubt that lay before her. It didn't seem to phase him, though. He simply smiled softly and said, "When it's a full moon, know that I'm huddled in a corner somewhere thinking thoughts of you to calm myself." Then he popped away, and she went to bed, to wake up the next morning to the life of a spy.
