Title: Whispers of Rain
Pairing: Sesshomaru/Kagome
Summary: one-shot.
She couldn't stop sneezing. It was pouring so heavily, yet she was running. She didn't know running in the rain would be this painful. She was inflicting self- torture on herself, just because of him. Each squelch of mud urged her to go on, each raindrop forced her to move, despite how pathetic and sickly she felt. Her tears became one with the raindrops that tumbled down her cheeks.
Stupid branch. She tripped over it and fell into the disgusting puddle of muddy rainwater. Without any motivation and even less energy, she couldn't run further. Her only option was to sit here, soaked in the rain, until someone came to look for her. Which could be ten years later. Or tomorrow. Or…now. A distant shadow. Surprisingly alone.
He offered a hand, and she simply took it. Desperation drove her to it. Still choking with tears, she couldn't say her thanks but expressed it with a shy smile. He briefly nodded. It wasn't as if he cared. She was messy, dirty and in his opinion, stupid to be sitting in the mud, getting drenched. Must be because of that idiotic emotion people call – love, he thought to himself. Emotions are weaknesses, no? That was why he would always be in front while the rest of the world lagged behind. She tagged along as he swiftly led her to shelter, which turned out to be a cave. Small and cozy, a much better choice compared to what she had just now.
Rain often brought about some hard thinking and unpleasant memories on her part, mostly about her first love. As she pondered over such things, he watched her. He didn't know why he had saved her from the relentless rain, or why he had shared what was meant to be his personal shelter. No. Maybe he was just imagining what he had done. Soon, she gave up on wondering why Inuyasha never returned her feelings. Staring numbly at the rain, soon, she began to sing. At first, it was soft, but gradually it became louder.
"Never knew I could feel like this…"
She paused, glanced at him, and then continued.
"Like I've never seen the sky before
I want to vanish inside your kiss
Seasons may change, winter to spring
But I love you, until the end of time…"
And she ended there. Somehow the words were robbed from her and replaced with the saddest tears shed out of mere heartbreak. If he knew how to comfort her, he would. But then again- he didn't. So he simply said: "Sing another song." Because it sounded like a fierce command, she gave one last hiccup and brushed away the tears. Gulping down her saliva, she began to sing.
"Why does the sun go on shining?
Why does the sea rush to shore?
Don't they know…"
Here she choked, then continued.
"It's the end of the world, 'cause you don't love me anymore?
Why do the birds go on singing?
Why do the stars glow above?
Don't they know it's the end of the world?
It ended when I lost your love."
She then managed to laugh at her miserable self, and at the irony of having to sing this song that depicted her relationship between Inuyasha and herself for the sake of entertaining him. And amusing her own self. The rain pattern changed to light pitter-patters and she got up. "I'll be going…EAAAH!" she slipped on a puddle, and instinctively used the few seconds before she hit the ground to close her eyes. Her lips didn't make contact with the ground though they did touch something else. Definitely softer than the mud. And what embraced her wasn't the Earth. It was a pair of strong hands, determined to hold on to her. She didn't fight. Because this was just what she had dreamed of all her life.
