Torn Into Pieces

As I step towards the identical doors my heart races.

How could something so natural like love cause such a quarrel?

I look at the bloody red doors, examining both of them closely. To my dismay they show no hint of whether a shy girl stood behind them or a ferocious tiger would launch out and tear me limb from limb. I push my brown bangs out of my vision and step again to the doors. Sweat trickles down my forehead as I reach for the door my forbidden lover pointed to. I look once more at the princess and her father. They both watch me with intent and still eyes. Her light blue eyes dazzle me as her golden blond hair falls on her cheeks. The king's eyes are emerald green, penetrating as if he can see right through me and his silvery locks elegantly dance in the wind. I turn back and close my eyes.

This boy is a waste of my time, the king taps his fingers on his arm of the throne.

Did I do the right thing? The princess thought, straightening up to see the boy's choice between the two doors.

I can't turn back now, I tell myself. I tighten my grip on the handle and twist it, opening the door. Nothing came out, only darkness fills the room. My eyes widen as I see what comes out of the door slowly.

Everyone in the stands leaned inward to see the creature that came out. There were a couple of scared yells and shouts as if they were preparing for the worst. A figure walked out into the sun to the boy. The townspeople gasped in surprise and awe as the being stepped into view.

I am relieved but upset that the girl steps forward instead of the beast. Her head stays bowed to me. Her brownish-red hair covers her face as she rises. I look into her beautiful deep purple eyes and smile innocently. I look up at the princess, tears fill her eyes. I turn to face the king and my ex-lover. The king's expression is still unreadable as he stands up.

"The boy has been found innocent," he said to his people. "They are to be wed immediately." The last word seems harsh and angry.

The princess sat still looking at the boy. She had let him live but at a cost of her own feelings. She wiped the tears from her cheeks before they stained them. Then she felt that same feeling she had had when she first saw her lover and that girl talking. Jealousy. Could she have watched her lover be ripped to shreds by the tiger? Her heart was torn into pieces.

My heart was torn into pieces. I loved the princess but yet we could never be together. The girl that stood before me is also very beautiful and I take her hand. She looks up at me and smiles but there is sadness in her eyes. The crowd applauds and cheers as the girl and I walk towards the king. The princess stares at me coldly and I no longer see that once small glimmer of happiness and youth in her eyes. I realize that the girl I fell in love with was no longer alive. "Naminé."
"Naminé," the king spoke to his daughter. He stood up, straightening his clothes. "You will attend the wedding like your people."

"Yes, Father," she stood up and took her eyes away from the boy. "I will attend…"

After the wedding was past she never did see that boy again. All she remembered of the wedding is the sharp stab of anger pierce through her heart as the boy and maid shared a kiss. Naminé would cry every time the date of when they first met came around. She sat in her castle alone in her room drawing pictures of him so she wouldn't forget. So she wouldn't forget that day when their relationship was torn into pieces.
