Red upon red

She couldn't bear to see his limp form lying in that crimson pool. His beautiful silver hair was tinged with the red.

"INUYASHA!" she screamed. She only hoped he was still alive to hear his name called. He had pushed himself too far this time, continuing to fight despite his many wounds. He did manage to kill the demon, but Kagome was unsure of the price he paid. Sango and Miroku tried to stop her from running blindly to him, but she never even noticed them. Her whole mind; her whole heart, was intent on getting to Inuyasha. She dropped to her knees in that evil looking crimson pool. Her tears fell onto him and cut streaks through the crimson on his face. She gently pulled his head onto her lap continually calling his name. Her tears continued to fall as she cried in agony, unable to express the pain she felt. His red haori, even darker red now, lay in the darker crimson. She was unable to take her eyes off it. He uttered a small painful moan as his eyelids slowly opened.

"K…Kagome" was all he could say wincing in pain. His breathing was shallow and ragged. He knew he didn't have much time left to spend with Kagome.

He gathered all the strength he had left and spoke, "Kagome, I…I love you."

It was all he could manage to say. He weakly lifted his clawed, crimson hand and Kagome took it. They stared into each other's eyes and Kagome knew he wouldn't live. With tears in her eyes she bent to kiss him for the first and last time. He kissed her back, and when they separated she watched as he closed his eyes, and Kagome knew they would never open again. She sobbed and closed her eyes in complete misery, wishing with all her heart for Inuyasha to live. When her eyes opened they were no longer their usual deep brown. They were glowing blue, synchronized with the partial jewel which hung around her neck. Without thinking, she placed her glowing hands on his red clothed chest and wished with all her being for the life to be returned to him. With the jewel dancing wildly around her neck, the blue glow enveloped them both. She poured all of her energy and all of her soul into him, just so she could see him open his beautiful amber eyes once more. When the glow subsided Kagome could barely remain sitting up. She had used all her energy in one last desperate attempt. If the jewel had not helped her, she would surely be dead. She looked weakly down at Inuyasha, his red haori upon the red of his blood. After what seemed to Kagome an eternity of waiting, his eyes fluttered open. His wounds were not completely healed, but he hardly even noticed them. He was able to sit up, bestowed with Kagome's strength and love.

"Kagome…you healed me" Inuyasha said surprised

Kagome could only smile. The last of her strength left her and she began to fall into the crimson pool she was sure Inuyasha would never leave. Inuyasha caught her and picked her up. She was transfixed by his gaze and could not look away from his eyes.

"You were going to leave me" she said in a voice so soft Inuyasha could barely hear her

"I wouldn't even dream of it" Inuyasha replied. He kissed the girl in his arms and she knew his words were true. But forever she would have burned in her memory, the image of red upon red.
