Wait Another Day

The room was quiet and still, the pale autumn moon out side the window provided the only light.Meiko sat alone in the shadowy gloom, watching the trees as they blew in the chilly breeze. A note she had received from Miwa lay opened beside her. He had given it to her earlier that day. Even after all this time he still would not give up on her.

Suzu was having a party at her house that weekend, and Miwa wanted her to go with him.He said it would be a lot of fun, and if she let herself she might really enjoy it. Meiko smiled sadly.Truth be told, she had a funny feeling he was probably right.

It would be so easy to just except his offer and get on with her life, she was getting tired of spending her free time alone. She closed he eyes and thought of what the future could hold. It would be a good match, approved of by her family and friends. Miwa would do everything in his power to make her happy. He could offer her everything that NA-Chan could not.

She knew that all she had to do was make the call. She reached out and picked up the phone. She cradled the receiver in her hand for a long time. Everything was right there within her reach. Yes, Everything that was, except what she really wanted.

Placing the phone back on the table she berried her head in her hands and wept. When she had finished crying, she got up and went to the window and leaned against the glass. It was cool and smooth against her hot forehead. The moon looked down solemnly as if waiting to see what her decision would be.

Meiko knew that she loved Na-chan, she always had, ever since the first time she met him. No matter what she said to try to convince her self differently, she knew with out a shadow of a doubt that it was true. There was simply nothing she could do about it, at least, not today anyways. Smiling sadly, Meiko turned from the window whispering softly " I can wait another day, my love. For you, I know I can wait."

As she prepared for bed, Meiko knew the future looked uncertain. She did not know what would happen tomorrow or the next day, there was the chance she would not have the resolve to hang on. But for now she would not give up hope, and that was all that really mattered to her.

As she climbed into bed and turned off the light she glanced over at the picture of Na-Chan on the table and whispered "I can wait."

In the cramped space of his small two-room apartment, Na-chan was pacing restlessly. A half packed suitcase lay open on the bed. Next to the suitcase was a one way train ticket to Tokyo. The ticket was one that he had bought earlier that evening on his way home from work. He had been walking home from the office deep in thought about a sale he hoped would go through, when a women wearing Meiko's favorite perfume walked by him. Just like that he was back at the moment when they had said good-by.

Before he knew what he was doing he had gone to the train station and bought a ticket to go back. It was not until he had returned home and started hurriedly packing when he realized what he was doing.

It would be so easy to go back to her, Meiko was sure to be forgiving; He knew she would take him back. He would have a chance to be happy again. But would it be what was best for Meiko? With a sigh he turned to the window and looked out.

Meiko was young, beautiful, and smart. She deserved the best, the best that he could not give her. He was sure that in time she would realize that. Hard as it was to accept, this was the way things had to be.

Taking a deep breath he spoke out loud, "I can wait another day my love." He had no choice, he would stay here. Maybe tomorrow he would not have the resolve to hang on, but for now he had made what he was sure was the right decision and that was all that mattered to him. Going to the dresser he opened the top drawer and took out the Picture of Meiko he had hidden there next to his socks, looking at it he whispered, " I can wait."
