It's a game, that's all it is. The Cat stalks it's chosen prey, feral and unpredictable. Slitted eyes shut in false contentment as it careful lies in wait for its victim.

It's how it began. Ichigo often felt eyes on him.

Always on him.

At school. At home. Outside.

Everywhere.

He'd turn around as he felt them bore into his neck.

And there would be no one there.

The Cat is happy. He's close, he's very close, and the Mouse is just a paw's length away.

And one day, Ichigo turns.

And instead of nothing/he's/ standing there. A congenial smile plastered on his face. The slits of his eyes trained on him.

Unwavering in their resolution.

And the Cat's excitement grows. The chase has started, the game has begun.

And all Ichigo can remember of the first time he'd turned around and seen him was the metallic clang of their soul slayers crunching together and the dust in the rain-laced wind..

And a hard kiss that took his breath away.

The Cat is pleased. He plays with the Mouse between his paws. The Mouse is a ferocious individual. Clawing, biting, scratching, and kicking, all in a futile attempt to free itself.

He yelled, he shouted, he insulted.

But nothing drove his personal stalker away.

The Cat is puzzled. When had the hunt become a game? When had the thrill of the hunt turned to a thrill of pleasure as he watched the Mouse grow equally confused when he did not devour him and merely toyed with him.

"Why?" He would ask, "why?"

his anger tainting the still air, the unspoken words lingering between them.

Why aren't you trying to kill me? Why are you doing this? Just…why?

And the other would only smile and wave good-bye before leaving.

-But not before slipping hands under his shirt, and a lingering kiss accompanied by a whispered breathe, words swallowed by parted lips and heavy breathing.

Because, just because.

And those matching words, were just as uncertain and confused as his were.

Which caused to puzzle him further.

But the Mouse always succumbed in the end. Hapless against the sheer cunningness of the Cat's mind and the persuasive roll of its paws as it played with it.

And sooner or later, his initial protests would die and fade into nothing as the other's face swam into his vision,

And Ichigo would find himself pinned beneath an other's body.

Their panting soon filling the air as they moved violently against each other.

And soon the Mouse grew used to the game. He wasn't afraid, not anymore. But that never stopped him from looking twice over his shoulder, nor from running as the Cat spied him and gave chased.

He just never feared for his life anymore.

Ichigo soon began to grow accustomed to it. He'd turn. And Gin was there.

Always there.

And Ichigo wasn't afraid, not anymore.

That didn't mean his eyes weren't always open.

That he never fled.

But strangely enough, he never feared that Gin would take his life.

And he realized that he trusted him.

Maybe he should have felt more like prey, cornered by a hunter.

But he didn't.

And for some reason, all he could remember, despite his denial and protests,

Was a stolen kiss in the rain.

And that, somehow, made all the difference in the world.

And the Cat is happy with his playmate, and the Mouse content to keep one eye on the Cat.

Because, after all, that's all it was.
