Edward came out of his chair when the door opened on silent hinges and shut. A shadow slipped into the room.

The shadow came forward and removed its hood. "I told you I would come." Katie's eyes where on fire. "You where foolish to put so many guards outside. I had to kill them all."

A moment later, Edward fell to the ground, his throat slit.

Katie leaned over Longshanks. "Still alive?"

He stared at her.

"I have come with a message for you…from my brother." Katie raised her knife and plunged it into Longshanks' heart and shouted in his dying face, "Freedom!"

Nicolette stepped into Isabelle's room. "My lady?"

Isabelle turned from the window. "What is it?"

"The King and your husband…are dead, my lady. And the Lady Katie Wallace has just wed Robert the Bruce."

"Katie was here?"

"Aye, she found me three hours ago and bid me to wait until three hours had passed before I came to you."

Isabelle smiled slightly. "Then she did as she promised."

"She also told me to give you this."

Isabelle took the object from Nicolette. It was a homespun handkerchief with purple thistles embroidered on it.
