Chapter 1

Don't Resist

Fwam! An unseen bomb explodes a few feet away from me.

"Take cover!" yells the captain as the rocks wiz over my head. The smell of blood impregnates the air making me scramble through the dirt faster even though it's everywhere. I load my crossbow as we reach the ridge and I see a combine directing troops and was about to shoot, when a bullet lands in my left arm. A flood of burning passes through my arm and I drop my bow over the ledge. Out of shear fate, my bow landed on a mine which caused a part of the ledge to collapse and they flooded though our one line of defense.

"No…..NO!" yells the person next to me. I grab his arm and, although in extreme pain said,

"Don't resist if you want to live" He shut up.

And so begins the story.

We marched in hand cuffs though the City 17 train station. Citizens watched in awe as they realized that someone like Gordon freeman was not coming again and this force of worn out, tired, and half dead rebel citizens was their one last chance of freedom. A few young people didn't even look up because they had never seen a hero. The reason I joined the rebels was because I was inspired by Gordon Freeman. I was very young when the citadel exploded and people realized that that the one free man had given his life to free thousands, and now the realization was that it was in vain.

The first thing that caught my eye was the big TV screen at the top of the station. It had the current leader, a high ranked combine, telling citizens not to resist. The subtle yet powerful way that Dr. Breen had controlled was gone now, the forceful, and unexpected way of the combine was the way of control now.

"Do not resist. It will just get you killed. Gordon Freeman is gone and will not come back. Do not resist" was the message from the TV.

"Train for Nova Prospekt now boarding" droned the announcer. My arm was just barely lifted with a loose sling so whenever I moved it was like the battle all over again. But it was a mild discomfort to the psychological terrors that lay ahead.
