Title: A Chance Lone Gone

Summary: My first (and one of very few) stab at a Cath/Warrick piece

Disclaimer: They're not mine… haven't we already been through this?

Spoilers: Anything up to season six is fair game (ie: Tina, w/ small references to "Down the Drain" and "Grave Danger")

A/N: Generally, I'm not opposed to a Catherine/Warrick pairing, but I'm not too good at writing it (at least in my opinion). I don't think I can write it as naturally as I can write Snickers, for example. So…keep that in mind when you notice how short this is.

Catherine Willows had a lot of things to be happy for. A beautiful daughter, a job she (mostly) loved.

She had a lot of things to be sad about, too. Her absence in her daughter's life. Eddie.

And now she realized she had one thing to be really sorry for; one big regret. Something she could summarize with only two words:

Warrick Brown.

They'd shared a comfortable companionship over that past few years; she'd found him attractive of course, chocolate skin, a laid back smile that could melt her heart, and eyes… those green eyes. But there was something else about him that just felt right. It clicked, and Catherine always found herself enjoying his company.

They'd gotten closer, as friends usually do, until one day she looked at him and didn't see Warrick, but saw someone who was good for her, could be good for Lindsey. Someone she could fall for. And it seemed like he felt the same was. Those tiny but abundant moments they had that dragged out just a bit longer than necessary: when his hand grazed her arm, or their eyes locked. Or that episode in the sewers.

And then Nick… well, after what happened to Nick, things changed. Not that she blamed Nick for anything; nothing like that. But after it happened…things weren't the same.

Warrick got married.

And Catherine's world fell apart.

She hadn't known until they were at that crime scene with David. But…that ring around his finger. She had to congratulate him; he was happy, and besides that, David already had. It was expected, so Catherine supposed she chocked out some warm sentiment, remembering she'd hoped he wouldn't notice anything was wrong.

Even though her heart was breaking.

But because they'd always been so close, he'd known. And he asked her to talk about it. So they did.

"I'm happy for you, Warrick" she'd smiled, like it was no big deal. And after she told him how much it sucked when a fantasy died (why didn't she just confess an undying love for the man? That would have been less subtle) he had nothing to say.

And neither did she. Things had changed; Warrick was gone to her. And things would never be the same.

Catherine Willows had a lot to be happy for, and lot to be sad for, and now, something to be jealous of. Something she could summarize in just two words. Two words she doesn't think she'll ever be able to say; two words she doesn't think she'll ever be able to make sound right:

Tina Brown.

A/N: Reviews make for one happy writer :-D Let me know what you thought.
