Something to Live For

Post "The Hunting Party", Sawyer decides now would be the time to tell Kate the truth. One-shot and my first Lost fic, so reviews would be appreciated.

Rated PG-13 for language.

Disclaimer: If I owned Lost, I would be getting paid for this.

Kate POV

We walked back to the camp in silence. Jack was in the lead, followed by Locke, while Sawyer and I took up the rear. Suddenly I felt something brush against me and I nearly jumped out of my skin in surprise. Sawyer takes his hand in mine. I smile to nyself and sneak a glance at his face to discover he's smiling as well. Well alright, it was that normal smirk he wore. But dear god, I never thought I would ever see it again. Suddenly, he pauses and leads me off the path. I look at him questioningly as Jack gives us a look.

"Sod off, Doc. Give us a moment, will ya?"

Jack nods almost sadly as he looks at our entwined hands and I feel almost obliged to go to him.

But for once, I don't. I look at Sawyer and we both sit down on the ground, still not letting go of each other.

I sit, waiting for him to say something, knowing I have to let him say it in his own time.

He averts his eyes and stares at the ground.

He begins softly, a tone I have not heard him use very often:

"Freckles...listen. When I saw you...when I saw they had you, I didn't know what to do. I felt so goddamn helpless. I looked at you and all I could think about was the fact that you would never know...never know how I feel."

He paused, looking at me sideways as if to gauge my reaction.

I smile and nod, encouraging him to go on.

"Jesus christ Freckles, you're gonna make me say it, aren't ya? Fine. I love you. Freckles...Kate...I love you. I love how much you piss me off. I love how you making me use those goddamn reading glasses. I love how you are your own person. You gave me something to live for here on this shit hole island. Okay, I said it. That's all I wanted to say."

He takes a deep breath and shakes out his shoulders as if relieved as he stands up and starts to walk away.

I'm trying to process what he just said when I realize I don't need to.

He took the words right out of my mouth.

Instead of yelling for him to come back, I take a running start and leap onto his back.

He trips as he catches me awkwardly in his arms: "FRECKLES! What exactly do you think you're doing, huh!"

I catch his lips as my response.

A/N: So that's my first ever "Lost" fic. I'm a Lost columnist at the offical Lost site and a die-hard Skate shipper but never actually got any ideas until after this week's episode. Let me know your thoughts! Please remember flames will be used solely to keep me warm at night.

Love,

Kiki
