The music stopped.

Truly, it was bound to happen….the dance they had been stepping to, it was beginning to end even though it never really began to begin with.

The two of them, they were out of step for a long while, even though they didn't want to admit it. Admitting it meant that they had been stepping on each other's toes, and they were too polite to call the other on it.

But now she had, much to his surprise, before he could even say a word.

Fingers were slipping, toes were crunched, but it wasn't the only thing that was hurting and falling apart.

No, him, with his graying hair and his grey-blue eyes, wouldn't betray to himself that he had fallen out of step and couldn't keep time with her anymore.

Yes, she was moving on to other partners, turning around in other arms.

One step forward, two steps back.

He used to lead, but now she was conducting her own melody, and he was left behind listening to the haunting notes of loneliness and regret.

The music began again, and she sang, dark eyes never leaving his.

I guess some people just shouldn't be together.
