Detach

A completely normal day.

Just any ordinary day. Wake up, make coffee on the hot plate for Roger and Maureen, make tea. Film Maureen sleeping. Go out onto the fire escape and film the street below. Try to write more into the screenplay. Try to get Roger to pick up his guitar again while thinking of Maureen.

Stand in front of Roger. Try to get him to accept the offered coffee. Watch Maureen dance over, dressed in a top that looks fit for the Cat Scratch. "Don't wait up, Pookie." Kiss on the cheek. Waltz out the door.

Hands shake. Throw coffee mug at wall. Watch it shatter into a thousand pieces. Wonder why the dull pain isn't getting any better.

Scream. Yell. You can't make her happy. You can't make her stay. Others have more to offer. She only comes back because she wants to dangle you on a string. Try not to love her. Fail. Collapse. Hopeless. Wish for comfort. Watch Roger stare into space as if it isn't happening. Imagine. Know what Maureen is up to. She doesn't want you.

You aren't enough for her.

Grab towel. Clean up mess. Sweep ceramic shards into garbage. Toss outside so Roger won't find their sharp edges and follow April. Ignore dull ache.

Detach.
