The face that he fell in love with, years ago, hasn't really changed. Yes, it has matured, and become even more beautiful, but behind it is still the same innocence, even if there shouldn't be any left. She is still young, yet old; she held the hands of dying men, and then had to tell their families. She has grown, in all areas. She could keep up with them, although now it is lamented that she never will again. But that face is still there, the one that smiled, that cried, that never gave up. But now, it seems, that may never happen again.
He wants to be the one that she sees when she wakes up, the one that walks her out of the hospital and into a fresh new world. He wants to hear her laughing, calling out his name as she waves him down in a crowd, to see her eyes, bright and flashing as she battles wits with someone. To see her embrace her friends, all at the same time, and tell them that she missed her. He wants her to ask what went on while she was "gone," and then to tell her all about it. He wants her to be herself again, instead of this ghost lying on the cold, hard bed.
He wants to rip out the IV needles, to pick her up and run to her until he finds the place where she is, and pull her out of it and back into her body. He wants to feel her heart beating against his as she opens her eyes and stares up into his face. He wants to hear her first gasp of breath, not the fake breath of the machine. He wants to hear her reprimand him for shouting for joy in a hospital, and then to hug him and kiss him like it was him who had been gone.
He wants and he wants and he wants, but, as the heart monitor sets out a monotonous beep that lasts into eternity, it seems that he can never have.

A/N:
Just a spur of the moment thing. It was originally about Naruto and Sakura after yet another tragic accident, but it can be about anyone, really. The characters aren't specified.
Enjoy.
