Why Can't Those Two Work Things Out
Author's Note: First story. So if you could read and review, I would appreciate it. Starts off right when Ross walks into Monica and Chandler's apartment. The first chapter will be mostly from that one scene, but the rest of the story will be an alternate plotline.
Disclaimer: I do not own any of these characters, except for Kendra. They are the property of Bright, Kauffman, and Crane.
Ross walked into the apartment looking a little dazed and extremely thoughtful. "Hey" Chandler greeted, but Ross didn't even look at him. Instead he looked straight at Rachel, looking like he wanted to tell her something.
"You uh, you may have been right about Jill" saying it like he really regretted something, and almost as if he was guilty of some terrible crime.
Rachel looked at him anxiously, as if she almost knew something bad happened she asked "Oh! I knew it! What happened?"
Looking down and a little disappointed in himself, Ross replied "Umm, she kissed me."
Rachel looked absolutely shocked and devastated, as if he had just cheated on her. She couldn't believe that after all they had been through in their past, he still had the nerve to kiss her sister. She kept it inside though, and calmly responded "What? You kissed!"
Chandler, trying to be a nice guy, said to Monica "Maybe we should give them some privacy". But Monica, always having to know everything, just shooshed him and listened carefully to Ross and Rachel.
Rachel looked to Ross like she was waiting for an explanation so he tried to explain the situation. "Look, I uh, I tried not to kiss her, okay?" he said trying to calm Rachel down a little. He was looking down and was nervous as to how Rachel would react, and Rachel responded just how he thought she would.
"Well, it doesn't sound like it! I mean, it's pretty easy not to kiss someone, you just don't kiss them! See look at us, right now, not kissing!" she said, trying to make Ross feel like an idiot. Yet again, her anger was building up inside of her, almost ready to just burst out yelling at Ross.
Ross, trying to calm her down again, put his hands out to show her he had more to say. "Let me finish, okay? She started kissing me and-and I didn't stop it. I guess I…I just wasn't thinking." He was desperately trying to get her to hear his side of the story and not let her anger get the best of her.
Rachel looked as Ross as if he were stupid or something. In her head, Rachel was thinking of how lame Ross' excuse was. 'Wasn't thinking? Geez I do some stupid stuff but at least I have a better excuse than Wasn't thinking'. "Yeah that's right you weren't thinking! Y'know what? Let me give you something to think about!" She was ready to pounce on Ross and give him a beating for actually kissing her sister.
Ross saw the sleeve pull, and backed off a little, trying to put his thoughts into words. He really didn't want to kiss Jill; he was just kind of caught in a bad situation. "Oh wait—hold it! But then I started thinking and I stopped the kissing."
'Oh, he stopped the kissing. How sweet, ppppbbbbhhhhtttt!' Rachel still couldn't see why Ross kissed her, and he wasn't giving a very good explanation of why he did. "Oh, well thank you for taking your tongue out of my sister's mouth long enough to tell me that."
Ross was still trying to find a way to get to Rachel. He knew this wouldn't be easy, but he still thought she would understand by now. Next, he just said the first thing that popped into his head. "Look I-I realize if anything were to happen with me and Jill then nothing could ever happen with us!" 'Whoops, didn't mean to say that.'
Rachel couldn't believe what he just said. She knew that he felt guilty for kissing Jill, but it didn't keep her from making him feel worse. But now what was she supposed to do? Ross had pretty much just said he at least thought about getting together with her again. 'Does he really want to get back together? I've gotta say something and figure out what he means' "What!"
'Whoa boy, this is bad' Ross couldn't believe what he had just said. I mean sure, he still had feelings for Rachel, but that's true of any person you loved. Trying to make it sound like he didn't currently have feelings, he replied the best way he could without showing how he felt. "No, I mean, look I don't know if anything is going to happen with us, again. Ever. But I don't want to know that it-it never could. So I stopped it and she got mad and broke my projector."
Rachel was still a little stunned at what Ross said earlier, but took that explanation pretty well. 'I'll think about it later' she thought. 'Right now, just gotta worry about Jill' "Wow. I, I don't even know what to say. Thank you." She said, giving him a little kick to keep the atmosphere friendly.
Returning the gesture, Ross lightly kicked Rachel and said "You're welcome."
On the other side of the room, Chandler had actually started crying. Monica was in disbelief. She had been trying to get him to cry all day with pictures, movies, telling stories of her death, etc. And now, he started crying for no reason it seemed. "Oh my God! Are-are you crying?"
Chandler, with tear-filled eyes, responded "I just don't see why those two can't work things out!"
After hearing that, Ross and Rachel looked at each other a little nervous, looking straight down at their feet after eye contact. Ross thought now would be the best time to leave, so he said his good-byes, giving one last look to Rachel before he exited the apartment.
After Ross left, Rachel went straight to where Chandler and Monica were at and asked "Is that how you really feel Chandler, that we should work things out and be together?" She was still a little confused at what Ross had said and now at why Chandler was crying, so she decided to try and talk about it.
Chandler was now kind of nervous, not wanting to make things weird. "Well, I mean you guys always seem to have these moments and stuff, so I just think about it sometimes." He didn't want to be questioned and put in a bad spot, so he left quickly, leaving Monica alone to have the awkward conversation.
"What about you Monica, do you think we should be together too?" Rachel didn't want to make things obvious, but her old feelings had stated to come back ever since she explained how good of a guy Ross was to Jill. She didn't think much about it, but now that Ross had said he thought about his future with their relationship, she was even more thoughtful about it.
Monica didn't want to have this conversation, but she was stuck. She thought 'Well, I'm here, so I might as well tell her the truth' "Honestly Rach, I can't say I haven't thought about you two being together or that the rest of us haven't talked about it. I mean let's look at what has happened in your past: you went out for a year and were ridiculously in love with each other, you got back together at the beach, he said your name at his and Emily's wedding, and you got married in Vegas. Now, I am not gonna tell you what I think or what you should do, but just think about your past, how you feel, and just follow your heart." Monica then left, leaving Rachel to think about what she had said.
Once Monica had left, Rachel decided to go back home and think. Once she got back to her and Phoebe's apartment, she went straight to her room to think about Ross. Her feelings had always been there, but thinking of getting back together with him never entered her mind. But just thinking of being close to him, him holding her in his arms, and kissing his lips gave her thoughts about her future with Ross. She got this tingly feeling while thinking about him, and her feelings were just rushing back. But she also thought that going down that road might not be a good decision. But each time she thought that, she then thought about Ross' charm, sensitivity, and loving ways and it just made her want him more. She decided to sleep on it, but still thinking that tomorrow could be a great day to start her future with Ross.
After leaving Monica and Chandler's apartment, Ross was very thoughtful and wasn't really looking at where he was going. He did have feelings for Rachel, but he thought that she didn't want to get back together or she would have said something like she always does. So, he decided to push aside his feelings, and try and move on. While still looking down and thinking, Ross ran into a beautiful woman.
"Jesus, I am so sorry. I just wasn't paying attention to where I was going." 'Wow, that wasn't very smooth, was it'
"It's ok, it happens. So, why were you looking down anyway?" She was very attractive, with short, red hair and blue eyes.
"Just thinking. So, what's your name" He really wanted to get to know her better.
"I'm Kendra, Kendra Phillips. And you are?"
"Ross, Ross Gellar. Anyway, in case you aren't doing anything, I was wondering if you maybe wanted to get a cup of coffee or something to get to know each other." Hoping she would say yes, Ross tried to give her a sweet smile to assure her that he was a great guy.
"I would really like that." She replied.
'Huh, maybe this could be a great day to start getting over your past, and looking to the future.' he thought.
