Sons of Sparda
A Devil May Cry fanfiction
by: Kimura Ayame

Introduction

The legend of Sparda is not nearly as widespread as it should be. Sparda, a devil from the underworld who awoke to justice, and turned on his own kind for the sake of humanity. He never took a human life, save for one willing woman sacrificed in order to seal the demonic realm away forever. One day, the Legendary Dark Knight simply... vanished. His true power, along with the rest of the demon world, remained trapped beyond the portal he himself sealed.

This was roughly two thousand years ago. But the story did not end there. For, carrying on his legend, Sparda left behind in this world two sons. Raised alone by their mother, a human woman, it seemed they were to become the new champions of this world. But... destiny seems to fulfill itself in strange ways...

When I met them, they were not the champions I had expected. In fact, they had become bitter rivals. Dante wanted nothing to do with the demon world, except to destroy all remnants of it in the human world. Vergil took pride in his ancestry, and sought to gain the true power of Sparda.

I have gathered as much information as possible about the sons of Sparda. It is incomplete, and difficult to be certain of, but I believe I can formulate a semblance of their story to be recorded as legend. The best legends are largely fictional, with a glimmering star of truth at the center. I hope that by weaving this tapestry of second-hand information and fiction, the few facts it is based on will shine through and survive the ages. This is the legend of the Sons of Sparda.

Prologue - Mallet Island

In the main room of the Mallet Island castle, a small figure sat hunched at the feet of a gigantic statue. It spoke quietly, "Lord Mundus... I answer your summons, and give myself to your will. Use me as you see fit."

He gazed up briefly, just in time to see the three eyes of the statue begin to glow a bright red. From the third eye, a beam of energy fired into the human's heart, filling him with evil energy. It began to twist his body from the inside out, purging it of all good that remained.

When the transformation was complete, the newly made not-quite-devil heard a booming voice speak from the statue, "Your service is accepted, human. I will entrust you with the most important of missions... a crucial event which will help to bring about my return. If you succeed, I will grant you leadership over a legion of my troops. However, if you fail..."

The dark warrior replied, in his new demonic voice, "I understand, my Lord. Failure means death."

The voice of the Dark Lord Mundus chuckled haughtily, "I expect great things from you, former human."

Disclaimer: This story is purely a work of fanfiction, and is not meant to be canonical in any way. However, it remains perfectly faithful to every piece of canon information I could dig up on the Devil May Cry storyline. Oh yeah, and I also don't own the franchise, but I do own the character Anielka Maximov.
