Naming Athrun

She felt like a queen.

Bright wrapping paper ranging from hideous, gaudy sheets to glittering prints were strewn in a mess around her, winking and rustling as she swept her way through the day's presents. A vase of rust colored roses bathed in dusty yellow light stood gracefully on a tiny coffee table, accompanied by an empty pop can and a thin periwinkle pen, complete with a swinging, dangling flower.

Meer sighed. She threw a pair of too small bunny earmuffs to one side, now foraging her way through a pastel gift bag. Reaching an arm delicately into the bag, pushing away the tissue paper with manicured fingernails, Meer pulled out a scruffy-looking teddy bear.

It was dark blue, and was made out a thick, slightly stringy fabric. She ran a finger across its soft, downy belly, and suddenly let out an excited squeal.

"I'll have to name you," she whispered conspiratorially, cradling it in her elbows. She felt very taken with this particular gift, and it wasn't until she gathered it into her arms, thinking of names, that she understood why.

"Athrun," she said, looking fondly at the stuffed toy wedged innocently in her chest. "I'll name you Athrun."
