The rain outside merely added to his current mood. He stared at the floor as if they held the answerers to his unending questions. Why am I here?

"Fullmetal did you hear me?" Said the colonel.

He was greeted by silence, the only noise being that of the rain as it continued to fall. The colonel stood up and sat opposite of the young man.

"Fullmetal…" The blonde slowly raised his head and met the colonel's gaze. Roy slowly sucked in a breath. The man's eyes were sunken and rings had begun to form under them. They were clouded with confusion, fear and hopelessness.

"Fullmetal…" His eyes refused to focus they remained glazed as they stared at the older man. Roy stood up and shook the boy's shoulders.

"Leave me alone." Ed's voice was barely a whisper but he said every word as if they were poison.

The colonel stepped back and stared down at the person before him. "Look at you Ed you're falling apart. Why have you come back to the military?"

The boy's eyes snapped into focus. "I told you to fix a mistake."

"But you have already restored your brother's body. And from what I've heard you are keeping the limbs." commented Roy.

"Yeah and what does it matter?" hissed Ed.

"I was just curious as to why you had given up all research into life alchemy after your brother was restored."

"Two automail limbs won't kill me," Ed said.

"I see…" The blonde lowered his head to ponder at his thoughts once more. The colonel waited.

"It's all my fault" Ed whispered. He lifted his gaze once more. Eyes full of regret, tears on the verge of falling.

"Al, Lior, my mom. I just wanted to help them"

"And you did" said the colonel sitting down beside the boy. "But all happiness must come to an end once reality sets in."

"I…I only wanted to help, but instead people have died because of me" he said as tears slowly streamed down his pale cheeks.

"I know, but that was the path that you chose. You joined the military in search of the Philosopher's stone. Two paths which can only bring death and suffering" whispered Roy.

"But…" Ed began.

"Do you not see? You made a mistake, you have paid for it and you have made it better. What more is there?"

"Does it ever become easier? The pain I mean," asked Ed.

"No but you learn to live with it" stated Roy. The young man sighed.

"What are you going to do now?" asked Roy quietly.

"I don't know I'll go where the wind takes me," said Ed standing and moving toward the door.

"Ed…" Roy began as he stood. He stopped with his hand on the doorknob.

"You know I will always be here for you".

"Yeah I know," he said as he turned the knob and headed out into the storm.
