Stacy called him late in the night asking him to come over.
she hadn't spoken to him in weeks, why was she calling him?
she wouldn't say kept repeating "it's important. please come"
so he went.

"What's up"
he asks, as he walks into the room.

"I felt lonely" she answered.
"Mark has been away for several days now.
I've missed you"

"may i recall, you are the one who's not talking to me.
aren't you angry"
he says, looking at her, frowning.

He's uncomfortable. she can tell.
she knows him enough.
why? he's been here before. they've been alone before. what's different now?

"i am upset, of course, but i also get why you did it.
you want me back" she says, walking closer to him.

House just looks at her, an eyebrow raised, not saying anything.
he walks over to the mini bar, silence become heavier.
"So... why did you call me?" he asks her as he pours a drink.

"I thought we could talk"

"Talk?" he looks at her, surprised "what's there to talk about?
i'm the one but you can't be with me.
you love your husband even though he's not right for you.
we already covered that" he leans on a shelf as he takes a sip of his scotch

"What if i changed my mind?
Maybe... being around you ... this last few weeks... you've changed but so have i... maybe we could try again"
she says, walking closer to him.

"you want ME to give YOU a second chance?"

she steps even closer to him, leaving almost no distance between them.
"Is what you want, isn't it, greg?"

He looks at her for a second, and she leans forward his heart his racing.
yes, it is what he wants.
or so he has believed since she came back.

"No."

she's within arm's reach but he doesn't want her anymore.

"I won't play again.
you left me after my infarction and now that mark's become... a problem, you're leaving him too?"

he hasn't backed away. he's still standing centimeters from her. he can smell her perfume, her shampoo.. all familiar smells. the same one from 5 years ago.

"You're wrong" he says, backing away "you haven't changed.
if you're sick of your sick husband, go find another healthy guy to turn into a cripple.
i'm done"

"Excuse me?"she yells at him "you've spent all this time chasing me just to say no?"

he backs away.

"I was never sure if i truly wanted you back or if i just wanted to hurt you. i guess now i know."

he starts to walk towards the door when her arm stops him "Greg, what are you going to do? i'm the only one who could ever love you!"

he smirks at her "but i'm as cute as a puppy!"

she's not happy. "that stupid sarcasm may fool your ducklings but it doesn't fool me.
you don't believe you can find anyone better than me"

"Sure, i can!. there's Carmen, in the lab, and kristy in the supermarket and let's not forget cuddy, you know she's hot for me"

she scowls. "oh, please, the only person who was, as you put it "hot for you" was that pathetic doctor cameron that follows you around. and you screwed that up too."

he half-smiles, and looks at her "you know what? i'm not sure i did.
sure, she says she hates me, but so did you and here we are.
and, to clarify, she's not pathetic. she happens to be a very qualified doctor."

"yeah, right, cause that's why you hired her"

"I'm gonna leave now, before anything regretful happens. goodbye stacy."

he turns and walks to the door she's saying something but he doesn't understand what it is.

Outside, he climbs on his bike and smiles.
stacy always hated bikes.
