People say it's always your best friend or your worst enemy. Christopher didn't think it was true. After all, David and Christopher have always been a little bit of both, right? Sometimes it seems like they grew up with each other, building tree houses in each other's yards, playing football and beating the shit out of each other. Seems like they've known each other for longer than a year. They're in sync. They still can't stand Loki and they don't trust Merlin. They like the same kind of dwarfish beer, can handle Jalil only in small doses, and April in even less. Sometimes they just look at each other and know way more than they should.

And sometimes it pisses Christopher off that David's that much like him. A little smarter, maybe, and not as funny. He's out to prove something, trying to be a hero, which Christopher would never do. But other than that? Nearly the same, and they can't stop hating each other for it anymore than they can stop hating themselves.

Though he doesn't really hate David. Not like he hated Senna. It's… complicated. Yes. Complicated. Spike-and-Buffy complicated, because they might not always like each other, but David and Christopher rely on each other. They have to. They have the same enemies and the same friends, the same weaknesses and the same strengths. They need each other. Live together, die alone. Christopher understands that. This is a war, after all, and he's been seeing it all firsthand.

He's not stupid. Contrary to popular opinion, he knows what's going on in the world around him. He knows he drinks too much. He knows how David looks at him – like he wants to fight or fuck and he doesn't care which as long as it ends in blood. He knows, because that's how he looks at David.

Yeah. It's complicated.

They've been completely in Everworld for six months now. The old David has been eaten up by all the harder, sharper things he is now. He lives in the dark moments, waiting for a dawn that never comes. And when he looks at Christopher like that, eyes dark and empty, asking questions Christopher can't possibly hope to answer, how can Christopher say no? How can he not help David?

Because... because, damn it, David is his friend, and he loves him. Not in the flowers and heart forever way, maybe, just in a way that means Christopher needs David, and David needs Christopher, even if they don't like it.

So, yeah, Christopher sleeps with David. He fucks him, and sometimes he makes it hurt. He hates that part of it, a lot. Because the last thing Christopher wants to do is hurt David, but it always seems to be the first thing he does. And it's the only thing David wants.
