Confessions of Love Come Too Late
"We're done here."
The sound of a gunshot filled the air.
A knife slid through flesh.
Two people dropped to the ground side by side; one bleeding from a bullet to the chest, the other a knife to the gut.
Struggling to maintain their feeble grip on life the two reached a shaking hand out toward each other. Hands clasped together they prayed the others would arrive in time—though something was telling them it was already too late.
"This really, really sucks." The knife victim said in a voice only a few decibels above a whisper.
A snort followed by a groan of pain escaped the gunshot victim's throat. "Stating the obvious again?" He managed to croak out.
"So it would seem. There's something I need to tell you."
A beat later the gunshot victim said, "And…"
"I love you."
With a groan the gunshot victim answered, "You're telling me this now? You're timing sucks but I love you too you know."
Neither spoke the words already spoken had robbed them of breath and both were gasping as they tried to catch it.
Minutes past, until both heard footsteps pounding toward them; they tried to call out but no sound escaped their lips. As the footsteps drew closer the clasped hands grew weaker until with a whispered, "I love you," both men let out one final breath and everything fell silent.
"Oh my god!" Olivia Benson said as she saw the scene before her. Following behind her were Fin, Munch and Cragen.
They all gasped at what they saw. Elliot Stabler and George Huang laid on the ground in a pool of blood—their hands still clasped loosely together.
Nobody spoke as Cragen looked for a pulse even though they already knew the truth—there wouldn't be any. Cragen looked up at the group and shook his head. Tears filled the eyes of all the Detectives but were soon blinked away in favour of tracking the bloody footprints left by the perps.
Cragen stepped away from the bodies and quietly made a phone call while everyone else kept their eyes on the trail. "They're on their way. I'll wait here," was all Cragen said as Fin, Munch and Olivia nodded.
"Let's go, we're not done here."
