I awoke at the sudden empty coldness beside me. I looked up, I realize that my wife was gone from my side.
"Christine?" I whispered as I stood up. Where could she be, at this time of night? She wasn't in our room, so I went into the hall.
"Christine?" I spoke a little louder this time. It had been only 5 months since the events at the Opera, only one since we were wed. I was still worried that the monster will one day return and take her away.I knew this to be silly...I myself saw that thing's obituary.
"Erik est mort" it had said.
I walked down the stairway, thinking maybe Christine had gone to the kitchen for a drink.
It was then that I heard it.
Oh! What a beautiful voice! She has always had the voice of an angel, but she has not sung in those past 5 months.
"It isn't right, I promised to only sing for him", she had said.
But who was she singing for now?
I ran around my house searching for her voice. Oh, what a beautiful voice! Until finally I realized that it was coming from outside in the garden. I run outside and I see her. And oh what a sight!
She stood there, arms to the sky and head thrown back in ecstasy...her soft blond curls being blown around in the wind...her nightdress whipping around her ankles...the moonlight shining off the white fabric and her golden hair. She was singing to Heaven and all its angels, and even the wind seemed to go silent to better hear her voice. Oh, the sight took my breath away! It was only then that I even paid attention to the words she sang.
"... foreseeing your condemnation, into this tomb I made my way by stealth, and here, far from every human gaze, in your arms I wished to die"
The last note stayed in the air for what seemed like an eternity. My mind only barely registered the shadow that approached my wife, I was drunk off of the sound of her voice and the world seemed surreal. The dark shadow stood before my Christine, for only a moment, before the darkness embraced her.
She cried out, but not of fear! She hung limply in the arms of Darkness, and I could barely hear her whisper, "You came back for me..."
The Darkness chuckled and then spoke in a rich and beautifully dark voice...oh it was the voice of Lucifer, I know this for sure!
"Of course, my little angel, my darling Christine. Not even death will stop poor Erik's love!" he had said.
Everything had started to clear, and I was starting to grasp what was happening. Oh, horror! A demon has hold of my wife! Forgetting that I had no weapon, no means of protecting myself, I ran forward with a cry.
"Unhand my wife! You monster! You demon ", I had said.
The Darkness looked up at me, for only a second, before looking back at my wife who was still laying limp in his arms...a small smile on her face.
"Come with me," it said very simply, "come with your poor Erik and have peace at long last."
"My soul longs to be with thee to rest!" she half sung, her voice quiet and sleepy.
Just as she said these words the Darkness disappeared and my wife fell to the ground. I rushed to her side and pulled her into my lap, grabbing her hand. I gasped and jumped up when I felt how cold it was to my touch.
"What horror is this?" I ask to no one.
My eyes widen as I notice something in the folds of her dress.
A once crimson rose, now dried and dead, with a note tied to it. With shaky hands I removed it.
"It was the Scorpion after all, Monsieur" it had said.
