Then the Lord said to Cain, "Where is Abel your brother?"
He said, "I do not know. Am I my brother's keeper?"

- Genesis 4:10

Genesis

It was his own hand that spilled his brother's blood, the sticky, warm, red liquid that reeked of humanity. It trailed down his arm and dripped to the floor, spilling from the ragged hole in his half-brother's chest, the grievous wound that Envy had created with his bare hands to destroy the golden-haired Abel's life. He was Cain, but no curse any God could bestow upon him would be worse than what he had already suffered. He was more than the scorned brother, the one who took revenge on the favored younger, he was a devil in his own right. What God could take more than what life already had from him?

Edward Elric's dying body fell to the ground, more blood running out from underneath him, spreading around him, beginning to cool already as the last light left his eyes.

Pathetic.

He was truly pathetic, as all humans were, creatures to be crushed beneath the feet of those greater than them. Envy was greater.

"Brother...Brother! No! Brother can't die!" Alphonse cried, still trapped in the activated circle on the floor, awaiting his own fate. Whether or not it was death or a return to that half-life he already lead, Envy couldn't care less.

"He's...dead?" Wrath asked weakly, his own blood staining the ground as well. Envy raised his head and smirked at the child sin.

"Yeah, he's dead. All of them will be," he responded, a cold smile lighting up his countenance.

He returned his gaze to his brother's chilling corpse, and his smile widened, showing off sharpened teeth bared in predatory glee. And then he laughed.

It was too bad, really. The boy had been quite...entrancing. The rage in his eyes as they had fought, the way his face had twisted in shock and horror when Envy showed him his true face was nothing short of exquisite. His entire body shook with it, the pure emotion running through his veins, the way his lips formed the word 'Father' even as they quivered with his fear and wonder. The hand, held up close to his side as if he was unsure of whether or not to strike out at Envy or claw at his own head, shaking like the rest of him...oh, it was a beautiful sight. It had been even more beautiful when his eyes widened in the throes of death, soft choking sounds coming from his throat as he began to drown in his own blood...music to Envy's ears. He had to watch as the spark faded from Edward's eyes, the crimson of blood so similar to his own...it was art.

Envy stretched out and poked at the empty shell with one foot, snorting in disdain.

"And He said, 'What have you done? The voice of your brother's blood cries out to Me from the ground. So now you are cursed from the earth, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand...'" Envy quoted, dipping his thumb into the pool of deep red, drawing the digit across Ed's forehead, first down, then across. "'O Death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory?' The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law.'"

And that was that. It may not have been that bastard, but at least the golden child, the one who took what should have been his, was dead and gone.

Then why didn't it feel like he won?
