Ashes, Ashes

Ashes, Ashes

We all fall down

He was barely holding on anymore. Waiting to see her face was agonizing. Being around her was worse. And nothing made sense anymore.

Ashes, Ashes

He would sit alone, the lines in his face more pronounced, the red line around his eyes giving him an intense look. He rarely slept, and felt his legs shaking more often, even when he had the cane. He would hold on to the edge, dance along that fine line, careful not to slip off. He wasn't sure of the consequences, but wasn't about to let his curiosity take him over. Not just yet. But soon, something inside would cause him to dance right off of that edge and slip.

We all fall down

He held on carefully, clinging to the edge. He was pushed further and further as he saw her each and every day. Every glance burned, every word cut, every smile opened a fresh wound. And he didn't have time to clean himself up before she struck again. The cuts that bled the most, the scars that hurt the worst, were of course the ones that no one could see. The wounds that she caused.

Ashes, Ashes

And it was happening again. They were in a room together, his hand slowly moving down her shoulder, feeling the heat from her skin beneath the proper work shirt she was wearing. He leaned against her, and she pushed back, feeling his weight pushing against her. The breathing was labored as his hand slipped under and made the contact it wanted. Barely audible, he leaned forward and whispered her name into the darkness.

Stacy.

She ran her fingertips down his back, desperate to feel more than what she had right then. She wanted to take and give nothing in return. And that killed him.

We all fall down.

Hours had passed. He was alone and she was with her husband. Her wedding ring had left a mark imprinted on his palm when their hands were locked together. It was if she had shown him the world and told him that is was everything he couldn't have. He couldn't have her. And when it mattered so much to him, his world began to collapse around him. He knew she didn't intend the pain, but it happened. Everything between them was a choice, except this. Because she didn't know what she did. All she knew was that he wanted her as much as she wanted him. But that could never happen.

Ashes, Ashes

And it killed him. It killed him more than anything.

We all fall down
