A'maelamin

(My Beloved)

The woods shaded her from view – she sat on a low flat bench by a lonely waterfall that fell in shinning waves into a puddle that came up to cover he bare feet. The woman had long dark flowing hair, held back by crystal clasps so as not to obstruct her view.

He stood at the edge of the waterfall glen, just watching her, marveling at her beauty that never seemed to keep him in awe. She must have heard him approach, he was so sure of it, and yet she did not turn to him – but he was happy to just stand there, watching her.

His hand came to touch the Evenstar – she had given it to him before he had left Rivendell with the rest of the Fellowship – he had thought that he would not see her again before the end had come; and yet, there she was.

With this thought – he entered the glen, twilight was falling and so did the shadows of day, and her aura was like a bright star that led his way in the failing dark.

"I had not think that you would be here," he said.

"I wanted to visit Grandmother before I left," she replied.

"Where are you going?" he felt his heart leap to his throat.

"Ada wants me to leave for the Havens,"

"I had thought so…" he trailed off.

"But I told him that I would stay," she replied.

"I do not want you to suffer because of me,"

"Please, don't – it is my choice," she replied. Her hand came up to finger the pendant she had given him months before, so that her memory would go with him, and her love, no matter where he went and what dangers he faced.

"I understand, but I would rather you be happy than in sorrow over something neither of us can control," he replied.

"Melamin, do not fear, I will not leave you," she said, she took his hand and motioned for him to sit down beside her.

"I do not fear that you shall leave, I fear that when I am gone from this land that I will leave you with a broken heart," he whispered into his ear.

"Are you trying to talk me out of staying? Because if you are, you are doing a terrible job at it," she laughed, it was like the tinkling of bells to his ears, and he smiled at her.

"Goheno nin, I am selfish – I want to hold you an never let you go,"

"I would rather you do that," she said, he wrapped his arms around her and she settled into his chest. She smelled of the forests of Rivendell, and of love and hope – and everything that he had longed for since he had met her all those ages before.

"Arwen, Melamin – can I ask you something?" he said, she pulled away from his lightly, a small smile on her lips.

"Estel, why must you ask when you know my answer?"

He did not answer her, but he took up her left hand, and slowly, he slipped on a three diamond ring onto her finger.

"I know that this is a silly ceremony, but this is how we humans do it," he smiled.

"I am fascinated by this ritual, what happens next?" she asked him.

"Instead of telling you, how about I show you?" he stroked her cheek and bent down. He touched her soft lips with his own. She leaned into his kiss and his essence, just enjoying this moment that would sustain them through the harrowing time to come.

When they finally pulled away, both of their souls were at rest with the decisions made – they knew that they were meant for each other that nothing could tear them apart.

Arwen looked at the ring before looking up at him. Aragorn just smiled and clasped her hand. They sat there – just listening to the soft sounds of the waterfall before them and basking in the presence of each other.
