It's a complicated place they live in. And they know it. Hour after hour they're investigating crimes. And day in and day out, they're seeing the worst of the city they know and love.

It makes them sick sometimes. Most of the things they see, they don't want to see. But they have no choice. So they go about their work, ignoring what people say about them. Ignoring the comments that they're tainted, that they're lower than anyone else in the department.

They chose this path and this career for reasons unknown to all but themselves. The odd thing about it is that they live in a world of strangers more often than they live in a world of those they know. And despite that fact, they allow themselves to care…they allow it to affect them. They would only be as soulless and inhuman as some might say they are if they didn't.

And it is for this reason that the city itself considers them to be among their most elite.

A/N: Completely random, I know, but I was thinking about that voice at the beginning of every SVU episode, so there you have it. And for the record, SVU's not mine.
