"Hey, you comin'?" he asks, turning to face me as he straightens the collar of his jacket.
"Yeah. I'll be there in a minute." I shuffle a couple of papers on my desk, as if looking for something. After a moment I hear him walk away and I know he doesn't buy my story. Doesn't really matter anyway, I think as I take the steps two at a time, going up to the crib. I slow down as I get to the doorway. She's right where I thought she'd be, standing at the window, looking through the grating and the bars. Her hands are in her pockets and I can't help but walk over and slide my arms beneath hers, giving her a hug. She removes her hands from her pockets, placing them over my own, which are resting on her stomach.
"How're you holdin' up?" I ask gently.
"All right."
"You wanna just stay at home tonight? I could make spaghetti with that sauce you love." My cheek is brushing against her hair and I can smell her shampoo.
"If you promise not to badger me."
"Scout's honor." I look down at the top of her head for a moment. "I gotta go. Fin'll have a heart attack if I don't get my ass out to the car in the next ten seconds."
"Go ahead. I have to head back downstairs anyway."
"I'll see you later then?"
"Of course, now go before Fin blows a gasket."
I kiss her quickly on the cheek for finally leaving her. When I get out to the car, Fin shoots me a knowing look before pulling away from the curb. It's going to be a long day.
