Chapter XLVIII: I Know Why The Caged Cat Sings.

Last Time.

A smoke bomb was dropped before Cheshire dropped down onto Cassandra and landed in front. "Odds are evening."

She then took off running before Oracle spoke. "Follow the leader."

The two followed after Cheshire who spoke. "Cell block's this way."

They got to the cell where Oracle was held before Oracle spoke. "We need to hurry this up."

"Hang on, Orphan. We'll get you out."

"Hold that thought."

The group turned to see they were surrounded by Shadows, Shade, Shiva, Cassandra, Rictus, and Black Spider. "The boss may have other ideas."

"Couldn't have said it better myself," Cheshire spoke as she pulled out a tri-pronged kunai and then tossed it in front of them.

Kage then appeared, head down hands clasped in front of his waist before looking up, eyes glowing red and slitted. "You done fucked up."

For each door holds both results right up until the moment it's opened.

Now.

Smallville April 21, 20:06 CDT.

"Supper's ready!"

"Thanks, Ma."

Clark said as he held a tractor up with one hand while Johnathan was cleaning his hands. "Pa and I just want to get the tractor up on blocks. Then we'll be right-!"

"Oh, no." Martha interrupted as Jon was playing with Wolf as Lois sat beside the canine. "You two will get to talkin' and we'll be waiting on you for an hour. Put that thing down and come wash up."

"Yes, ma'am."

"Gotta learn that trick, Martha," Lois said as she stood.

"I've got a feeling you have tricks of your own, Lois," Martha said as Lois and Jon walked up onto the deck of the house. "How does fried chicken and cornbread sound, Jonny?"

"Great! Will Uncle Conner be here?" Jon asked having the adults look at each other as Wolf howled.

"(HOWL!)"

Clark's parents went inside as Clark and Lois sat down on the steps. "Jonny, we talked about this. Uncle Conner passed away." She said as Jonny started petting Wolf.

"I know. He can't come to our house 'cause he "passed it away". But every time we come to Grandma and Grandpa's house Uncle Conner meets us here with Wolf. Every time. And Wolf's here. So Uncle Conner won't pass us away now!"

Clark then placed a hand on his son's shoulder at that. "Jonny, your uncle has died. This means that the part of his journey where his body is alive is over. His body doesn't breathe anymore, it doesn't play anymore. And, well, we don't get to spend time with him anymore."

"Why?" Jon asked Clark who sighed.

"Inside a living body, there are many little parts that each do an important job to keep a body healthy and alive. Now if some of these parts stop doing their jobs, the body can stop working and die. And that's what happened to Uncle Conner. But even though we don't get to see or spend time with Conner anymore, because his body is dead, your memories of him will always be alive… In your head and your heart." Clark finished tapping Jon on his forehead and chest as Lois pulled her phone up.

"And these pictures can remind you of those memories."

"And we believe that when our journey's over, we will see him and everyone we love again."

They looked back to see Martha and Johnathan had walked back out.

Later, Clark sat on the top step as the sun went down. Lois then walked out and leaned against the support beam. "Jonny's asleep. He seems okay."

"I'm glad Jonny's okay. 'Cause I'm not." He replied looking up as a tear fell. "If I had gotten to Mars five minutes sooner..."

"You would have died alongside Conner, leaving your son without a father and me without you." She said as she sat down. "I know that sounds selfish, but..."

"I'm the selfish one. Ten years ago, I couldn't get over myself. I had all these excuses, and suspicions. All this misplaced blame. I couldn't see him for who he was. I wasted so much time."

"But you fixed that," Lois spoke as she looked at him. "Conner knew you loved him like a brother. And he felt the same about you. Loving each other… that's all any of us can do." She finished before hugging him.

"I hope you're right. God, I hope you're right."

Santa Prisca April 21, 21:09 ECT.

Naruto cracked his neck as he looked at everyone but Savage, and Shiva was knocked out before a shadow came under them having all but the three fall in. "Take me to Slade."

"And why should I do that? You plan to take over?" Shiva asked, crossing her arms under her bust.

"Did he attack the innocent? No, I just want to remind him." Naruto walked forward to stand in front of the Assassin.

"And if we don't?" Cassandra asked as Naruto turned to look at her.

"Like I told Shiva last year when I saw her from our get-together, don't mess with those who aren't heroes themselves, or get to us when we're out of costume. I'm not like the other heroes… You mess with my family, especially those not in costume… They will never find your body." Naruto explained as Cassandra took a step closer.

"You heroes don't kill."

"I'm not just a hero… I'm a husband and father. I'm sure you've seen what a father would do when their family is threatened… I'm worse for you because you're on the opposite side this time." Naruto said before a clone dropped down and put a blade to Cassandra's throat. "Now, take me to ol' eyepatch."

Taking him to the other side of the building, Naruto walked into a room to see Deathstroke sans mask at a desk writing on a paper. "What do you want?" Slade asked before looking up as Naruto pulled his hood down.

"To give you my warning in person," Naruto replied as he walked over and placed his hands on the desk. "Of course, there's 'No harming innocents'… But if you target my kids, or family who aren't heroes, I'll gut you."

"Many have tried."

"I'm different." Naruto leaned down at that. "You attack anyone in my family who's not a hero, pray to whatever god you believe in because I will find you and I will kill you. You try to go after one who's out of costume where we can't get changed… I will make it so you can't eat solid food for the rest of your life."

"Not worse."

"We know the risk of doing this. But I'll do something about it." Naruto straightened up and turned around to walk to the door. "Let me ask you this: What if I did the same? Go after your wife or-?" Naruto stopped to lean his head to the left side as a sword shot past him and embedded itself in the wall. "See, not so fun when you're on the receiving end." Naruto then pulled the sword and threw it back, having it go into the desk. "As I said, don't attack any innocent and I won't take over the League, and don't attack my family."

Naruto then opened the door and walked out, passing Shiva before stopping. "I don't want to see you attacking Cassandra again."

"She's my daughter."

"And she's my responsibility now. Come after her like that again, and it won't end well for you."

Smallville April 22, 09:13 CDT.

Outside of the farm, Jonny laughs while riding Wolf, as his parents and grandparents look on happily.

Gotham City April 22, 10:14 EDT.

In her apartment, Barbara hugs Orphan.

Santa Prisca April 22, 10:15 ECT.

At the Shadows' headquarters, Cassandra Savage communicates with her father, while in the cell block, a bandaged Lady Shiva stares at the chains that once held her daughter.

Gotham City April 22, 07:16 PDT.

Artemis returns home, to find her in the kitchen waiting for her.

Later, Naruto was on the roof looking at Onyx and asked why she was at his house. "See, I was raised by my maternal grandfather. Will Everett, 'The Amazing Man'."

"I remember reading him," Naruto said, crossing his arms.

"(Sigh) He was good to me, but I felt trapped. Papa Willie was always more Booker T than Malcolm X. He believed in leading by example and doing the right thing, which sounds great, but it would never be enough. The world was never going to just catch up and recognize our worth. Even as a kid, I was… I was frustrated and angry. I wanted more. Then, Sensei found me, promised I could make a difference, change the world, and throw off the old order."

"By destroying the old," Naruto interjected. "Every time I ran up against them, 99% of the time they wanted to destroy the good with the bad… But you see, if you hide the bad stuff, people will forget it… And pretty soon, they could repeat it… Paraphrasing it but I believe it."

"I ran away. And on Infinity Island, the Shadows felt like my new family."

"What you experienced here was not family… But manipulation." Naruto explained having her widen her eyes. "I married into it and her guard told me the Shadows kept an eye on my wives and the granddaughter of Amazing Man… From what they said it was from the moment each was born. Their role was to create loyalty. To create fanatics… You saw the extreme result with Shiva."

"If that was true then why does she talk highly of you?" Onyx asked Naruto who sighed.

"Back when my wife was on speaking terms with her father, I trained the women she chose as her bodyguards, Shiva wanted training as well. I'm the only man to ever beat her. Part of me kinda hoped that she would leave when Talia did… But as you can see, she still puts the Assassins over her daughter."

"But Papa Willie… He died a few years later. I left a man who loved me. He loved me, and I never saw him again…"

"I'm glad you finally understand. The shadows made you into a weapon. I believe I can help you now, but only if you approach your rehabilitation fully."

"I wanna stay."

Naruto nodded at that. "OK."

They went to walk inside before she spoke up. "They never said you trained guards."

Naruto snorted at that. "Probably embarrassed by how good I was compared to them."

"No, they said something about a harem."

Naruto groaned before closing the door behind them.

Sorry for the shortness of the chapter, but didn't think Naruto would have a hard time with the fight.

Short review of this arc... This is my favorite arc for the season a big part is I'm a fan of mysteries though yes they do spoil it in the third for it. Plus Artemis is my favorite characin for this show... I say that even though Dick has been in previous shows but I think just how he kinda was like Batman for the first few episodes... In that, he left the others while doing his own thing.

But as someone who grew up on him not wanting to be Batman and not really fighting/acting like him was jarring to me. I know I've read reviews on confusion on not arresting Shiva, but as far as we know, not only is she part of the Assassins but the Light and they showed that the Light had a mole in prison as the warden so who's to say that's still not the case?
