"Dunder Mifflin, this is Pam."
Pam transferred the caller to Michael, and went back to her game of Spider Solitaire. What a terrible day. First, she was forced to sit in the conference room with her femaleco-workers for hours, listening to Jan explain how they could get ahead in the work force. After finally escaping that torture, she managed to piss off both Roy and Jim within 20 minutes of each other. The only bright spot of her day had been when she told Jim about the internship opportunity. His wide smile seemed bigger, if possible, and his warm brown eyes had lit up.
The internship sounded great. Amazing, actually. But Roy adamantly opposed that idea. He said there was no guarantee that it would lead anywhere, and besides, what was he supposed to do on the weekends if she was in New York?
Jim had been upset, as Pam expected him to. She didn't, however, expect him to be so disappointed. They were just co-workers; casual friends. She was taken aback by how frankly he confronted her and how crestfallen he had seemed.
Pam picked up the internship brochure for the zillionth time, running her fingertips over the glossy picture of the young woman drawing. 'Do you have a passion for art?' read the caption. Pam sighed and placed the brochure in her bottom desk drawer. Maybe next year, when things had settled down, she would take it out and try talking to Roy about it again.
Still, her thoughts drifted back to Jim and the way his animated eyes had lit up.
