Summary: The animal you transform into says a lot about who you are. Unfortunately, the Potters learn this far too late….
A/N and Disclaimer: I don't even know where the inspiration came from. It's really short, even by my standards. I like it- I get shivers down my spine. I had read some of the Halloween stories regarding Lily and James, but never really liked one. So I decided to try my hand at it….I own nothing. Some dialogue was taken directly from Harry Potter, credit to Miss Rowling. The information about the Stag comes from Wikipedia.

"Take Harry and go! It's him! Go! Run! I'll hold him off-"
Lily scrambled for her wand and ran up the stairs, two at a time. Holding back tears, she cried out telepathically, hoping her husband would know that she loved him, that he was the only thing that mattered… the front door opened with a crash, and the next sound Lily Potter heard was the high, cold laughter of Lord Voldemort. This sped her footsteps down the hall, despite the goosebumps running down her spine. How were they to escape? Apparate? Fly? Her mind raced, trying to find a way out for her and Harry.
She threw open the door to the nursery, scaring her son. As she picked him up, an eerie green light flashed through the house. Knowing it was no use now, that he was surely coming, she set down Harry with a kiss to his forehead.
She whirled around to face the door, her wand at the ready. 'Strange that they had trusted Peter. After all, didn't he transform into a rat?' She smirked… 'Why didn't they see it before? Sirius became a dog… loyal and all that.' He was climbing the stairs. A shudder went down her spine. 'James transformed into a Stag.' Lily's mind raced back to her father's mythology books… 'in French Mythology, the stag was the Sorcerer… in Celtic, the protector… in other Mythologies, stags were the messengers to the gods, or even sped dead souls to the afterlife…' Another shiver went down her spine. She felt her son tense behind her. She could see him now. Lord Voldemort. Lily wondered what animal he could transform into….
"Stand aside, you silly girl…."
