Chapter 4: Singing The Love-The Truth Is Out
A week later, the Vortex's held Cindy's mother's funeral. It was a small congregation. It was just the Neutrons, the Folfaxs, the Deans, and, of course, Cindy and her father. Cindy clung to Jimmy through the whole service. She might have hated her mother, but her being dead was just so...so...different. She never imagined something like this would happen. Their last conversation ran through Cindy's head over and over again...
------------FLASHBACK-------------
gentle knock came to Cindy's door. Her mother slowly opened it.
"Cynthia? I'm going now."
"Mmmkay mom! Bye!" Cindy replied absentmindedly. She was too wrapped up in her fantasies of her and Jimmy together...in her house...at night...alone...with no parental supervision...
"OK, well, bye!" Cindy's mom shut her door and headed downstairs. Cindy peered out the window and watched her mother pull out of the driveway and drive down the road.
-------------END FLASHBACK---------------
Fresh tears flooded Cindy's vision and spilled down her cold cheeks. Jimmy gently wiped them from her face and held her closer.
"I...j-just can't...can't believe..sh-she's gone," Cindy choked out. Jimmy nodded and kissed the top of her head.
"I know Cin," he said gently. Nothing he could say could comfort her, and he hated seeing her like this. She was the strongest person he knew, and here she was, sobbing! Jimmy held her tightly against him and closed his eyes. It was up to him to be strong, and he wasn't going to cry in front of Cindy. When the service was finally over, the congregation paid their last respects to Mrs. Vortex. Finally, it was Cindy's turn. She slowly walked up to the front of the church. The mascara was running down her cheeks from so much crying, and her black dress was wrinkled from Jimmy hugging her so much. She took a deep breath and faced the congregation.
"My mother," she began, "wasn't the greatest person in the world. I loved her, but there were times that I just...just couldn't." She shot a worried glance at Jimmy, who smiled encouragingly. "Ever since she divorced my father, things changed. She went out more often, to...bars. She'd get drunk and when she came home...sh-she'd...she'd...b-beat me," Cindy choked out. The congregation gasped in unison, but she continued. "Everyday I thought how much I hated her, how much I wanted her to...to...to die. I realize that was a mistake. It's just not the same without her. She gave me shelter, food, and clothes. I realize I can't live without her. Sh-she was my mother, no matter what she did to me." Cindy turned around and looked at her mother's casket. A song from Rent came into her head, and she began to sing.
"Live in my house. I'll be you're shelter. Just pay me back with one thousand kisses. Be my lover and I'll cover you. Open your door, I'll be your tenant. Don't got much baggage to lay at your feet. But sweet kisses I've got to spare. I'll be there and I'll cover you. I think the meant it, when they said you can't buy love, now I know you can rent it, and at least you are my love. All life. All my life. I've longed to discover something as true as this is yeah..."
Then Libby began to sing.
"So with a thousand sweet kisses"
Cindy: "If you're cold and you're lonely."
Libby: "I'll cover you. With a thousand sweet kisses."
Cindy: "You've got one nickel only"
Libby: "I'll cover you. With a thousand sweet kisses"
Cindy: "When you're worn out and tired."
Libby: "I'll cover you. With a thousand sweet kisses."
Cindy: "WHEN YOUR HEART HAS EXPIRED!"
Then the whole congregation joined in.
"Oh lover I'll cover you."
Cindy "Yeaaaah"
Congregation: "Ohh lover"
Cindy: "I'll cover you."
Congregation: "525,600 minutes. 525,000 seasons of...LOOOOVEEE."
Cindy: "I'll cover you all."
The congregation finished the song in tears. Cindy quietly stepped down and walked over to Jimmy. Jimmy pulled her into a tight embrace and whispered, "That was beautiful Cin." She looked up at him and softly kissed him.
"I love you Jimmy," she whispered.
"I love you too Cin," he whispered back. "I always will, no matter what happens."
A/N: OK, kind of a boring chapter, but even I was crying a little when I wrote it! Oh and the song was "I'll Cover You (reprise)" from Rent. R&R! Sorry it took so long.
