Sarah gazed toward the brush on her dresser. Obediently, it flew gently through the air and landed in her open palm. A beaded headband followed, hovering to her right until she was finished running the brush through her black tresses and could pluck it from its place. Her emerald eyes glittered in the morning sunlight, and she hummed the song that was stuck in her head. She waved her hand and the brush floated back to its home on the dresser.
"Morning," Sarah smiled toward the reflection in the full length mirror on the wall. She hummed and spun in place, enchanted by the rays of sunlight that crept in the window. Still dancing, she floated down to the kitchen, grabbed a woven linen bag and moved outside.
"But what no one knew," she grinned, twirling, "is that the king of the goblins had fallen in love with the girl, and he had given her certain powers." As she twirled, her feet left the ground, and leaves swirled about her ankles. When she again touched the earth, she laughed, reveling in the daylight. Magic. Who would have believed that the awkward, stubborn teenager would have discovered such a gift? The tingling ability seemed to add to her giddiness as she headed toward the lake.
The chilliness of the autumn season didn't seem to touch her; she was one with the wind and the earth as she ran toward the shining waters before her. Gaining speed, she ran barefoot across the moving grass, finally plunging into the reflective surface and disappearing beneath.
The goblin king smiled to himself. He had wondered when the girl would discover the powers that she had inherited. Chuckling into the crystal that he held, he congratulated himself on his cleverness. Returning the ring with a cryptic note was just the thing to awaken her curiosity and deeply imbedded love of magic. Certainly she now believed that the ring contained the powers that she possessed. It would only be a matter of time, now, before she sought him to either defeat him once again or thank him for the gift. His heart skipped as he imagined it being the latter.
Gleefully, Jareth kicked a goblin out of the way.
