She caressed her hand gently over his clammy skin, feeling various scars and bruises under her fingertips. His breath hitched, and she glanced immediately over at his care-worn face, settling back into a neutral position - the grimace left his face as the sickly tremors that wracked his sculpted frame subsided.
Kate didn't know if he recognized her in his unconscious delirium, but she sometimes heard her name whispered through parched lips, escaping as a sigh into the silence of the cavernous room. Every time he did, her fear that he could never return her feelings for him ebbed away.
Feeling his tense muscles ease and relax, she began her exploration once more - her fingers now barely skimming the surface until she came to his bicep. She probed the raised, angry scar - still so new.
She remembered the day that it had happened. Fear overcame her as she saw the blood begin to spurt from the deep wound. Although she had faith in Jack and his medical abilities, she had feared that the tourniquet wouldn't hold, that subconsciously, Jack simply didn't have the will to save the man's life - his 'competition'.
Slowly, Sawyer would recover as he always did, and resume his role as swaggering beach-trader. Almost immediately, their fellow survivors would begin to loathe him again. But Kate? She would only feel her love for him grow. It would grow every time he flashed his killer smile in her direction. Every time she would hide the hot blush that rose in her cheeks, she would love him more. She would be unmanned whenever he looked pointedly down at her lips and then back to her eyes--an action that would have earned any other man a sound slap.
Kate felt him move once again under her warm palm, and she refocused her attention onto him, hearing once again the raspy "Kate," as his callused hand clasped hers. She smiled down at him as his eyes opened slowly and the intensity of his blue irises pierced her, her mind still remembering a future that had not yet come to pass.
