Speedle reached around and wrapped his arm around Calleigh's waist, settling his hand naturally on her hip, pulling her close to the side of his body possessively.
Calleigh hesitated for a second but then breathed in the smell of him, smiled at the familiarity of him and relaxed easily against his body.
Her body fit against his, easily and naturally, and he gave her a comforting, encouraging squeeze as they walked together to the end of the small, old, but private pier at the far end of the docks.
"You look amazing" Speedle hissed under his breath at her as they walked.
"Why thank you" Calleigh felt her cheeks flush red.
She had changed into a pair of low slung black jeans, a decorated with embroidered dark blue flowers winding up one leg, with a pair of low heeled boots that would make it easier to run if need be, but still looked good with the outfit. Her top was black too, cut very low in front, and low enough in back that Calleigh had needed to wear an 'invisible bra' just to pull the look off. While petite, Calleigh was curvaceous and as she had explained to Alexx as the coroner helped her to dress in the locker room, she couldn't go without a bra if she wanted to. Which she didn't. She had thrown on a thin jacket but left it open, flashing skin as she moved. Calleigh carried a gun, but did so obviously, as Speedle had explained that the people they where going to meet might be more suspicious if she didn't seem at least some kind of nuts.
Speedle also carried his own gun, but that was a given.
"Barlow" The voice from the phone, Drake, drawled, and Speedle pulled Calleigh up short, slowly, casually, but she felt him tense ever so slightly.
"Hey man" Speedle, all business now.
"So this is you lady friend?" Drake smirked and stepped ever closer.
He was tall, taller than Speedle, massive though the body, muscle rippling under the tight black military style t shirt he wore. He wore black cargo pants and black military boots too, and his hair was styled in corn rows, pulled back from his head. He was dark skinned, more so than any African American Calleigh had ever seen, his skin almost true black as he loomed over them. His eyes though, where a shade of light blue, piercing and intense. Calleigh plastered on a smile and held out a hand "Hey" she said brightly.
Drake took her tiny hand in his huge one and squeezed it, gently, but enough for her to get an idea of the kind of strength he held. "You're a lot prettier than some of the skanks my boys usually bring back" he told her, obviously leering at her.
"Timmy too?" Calleigh asked teasingly.
"Actually no, we never see Timmy's ladies…we where starting to wonder about him. But a little firecracker like you on his arm…proof positive to me that Barlow…bats for the home team….that is, if you're genuine" he grin/grimace vanished and his mouth was set in a hard line.
"You know it's a bad cliché to ask us to make out or something but we will" Speedle stated.
"Do it" Drake ordered.
Speedle turned Calleigh and kissed her suddenly, running one hand through her hair, pressing the other against her back so she was pressed against the length of his body. She melted into the kiss with much more ease than she would have expected of herself, sliding her arms around Speedle's narrow waist, kissing him back as passionately as he kissed her. The hand at her back tensed and he lifted her ever so slightly, so that she had to rise on tip toe to keep her lips on his. The hand in her hair slid around so that it cupped her face and Speedle drew back. Calleigh opened her eyes and gazed into Speedle's, feeling her now tingling lips curl into a smile. "You're a really good kisser" she whispered almost silently.
"You too" he told her, equally as quiet.
"Um" Drake said, drawing their attention back to himself.
Calleigh felt her self blush and turned her head away from Drake, resting it on Speedles chest. "Alright?" Speedle asked.
"That was beautiful" Drake smiled grimly at them. "How about more of a show?"
"How about you fuck off" Speedle matched Drakes grim grin.
Drake chuckled and eyed up Calleigh again. "Damn Barlow, where did you find her?" Drake asked.
"That's a secret" Speedle told him.
Drake paused and despite his constant leering, Calleigh could see the cogs turning behind his eyes, see the intelligence that burned within "I don't like secrets Barlow. Now where has all this talk that you're a cop stemmed from, hm?" Barlow stepped a half a step closer to Speedle and Calleigh. It didn't bring him much closer but with his height, he positively loomed over them.
"You tell me buddy, all I know is what you told me on the phone" Speedle told him.
"You look awful beat up" Drake said.
"I got in a bar fight" Speedle answered quickly, but not that hurriedly that it seemed suspicious. "Where is Cassandra?" he asked.
Drake sighed dramatically and turned, stomping off out of the pool of light cast by the amber lamp hanging from a pole on the pier. He stomped back, dragging a girl by the arm. She fought him, hard, twisting her body the way kids would when struggling against a parent. Some how, she slid her arm out of his and made to run forward but he reached out one huge hand almost casually and caught the back of her hair, dragging her back wards and picking her up bodily with his other arm. He held her up so their heads where level and her feet kicked at the air over a foot off the floor. Calleigh figured the girl to be about five feet four inches. Drake was easily a foot taller than that. The girl, Cassandra looked about twenty. She was petite, but like Calleigh, curvaceous with it. Her figure was compact, athletic, and she looked even smaller than she normally would next to the mountainous Drake. Cassandra wore a red, velvet vest top with what looked like a cut off black chiffon skirt that had a worn in look to it. It was cut just above her knees and her legs beneath it where clad in black and silver tights, her small feet wrapped in high riding black converse sneakers. She had pale skin but dark eyes, the colour of which Calleigh couldn't quite see. Her hair was a dark, reddish brown, cut short, framing her face. The word pixieish came to Calleigh's mind as Drake held her effortlessly. "She's pretty aint she?" Drake smiled into the girls neck, taking a deep breath "She smells like cinnamon" he hissed.
Calleigh repressed a shudder.
Another man stepped forward, as tall as Drake but much, much skinnier. He didn't look weak though, there was a coiled intensity too him, sinewy muscles stood out on his bare arms as he stood beside Drake, wearing an almost identical out fit.
He glowered with un disguised hatred at Speedle, then smiled leeringly at Calleigh. Calleigh found her self shuddering and resisted the urge to step behind Speedle so that this man couldn't see her. Speedle sensed her discomfort and squeezed her comfortingly with the arm he still had wrapped around her.
"Let her go Drake" Speedle snapped, "I proved she aint a cop, let Cassandra go"
"All you proved is that you got a friend willing to let you mack on her in front of strangers" the new guy interjected.
"Fuck off Adam" Speedle said wearily.
"Well the first word is what I'm aiming to do, right Cassie?" the lanky guy shot another leering glance at the girl who still fought against Drake's grip on her.
She looked more angry than afraid "Go fuck your mother" she spat as she kicked hard at Drake's knee.
Drake barked in pain and dropped Cassandra. She hit the ground and dropped into a crouch, one hand disappearing behind her back. As Adam lunged for her, she drew a wicked looking knife, turned and held it, out perfectly positioned so that if Adam didn't stop himself in time he'd slice his own throat. Adam froze a hairs breadth away from the blade.
Cassandra had determined, yet oddly blank look on her face, as if killing Adam would mean nothing to her. The skinny man raised his hands as if to show he wasn't armed and Cassandra began to edge back wards.
Calleigh realised she had reached for her gun. She kept her hand where it was, not entirely convinced it was safe to let her guard down yet.
"Cass, you okay?" Speedle asked.
"Peachy keen jelly bean" Cassandra told him, her voice actually quite friendly, considering.
"I'm gonna enjoy it when I get my hands on you, bitch" Adam hissed.
Cassandra, who had yet to move, even to blink, cocked an eyebrow "And when's that gonna be limp dick, before or after I slice it off?" She drew another knife and held it loosely in the cup of her hand, but with purpose and intent.
Speedle moved forward but Drake was too quick, sweeping his arm down and wrapping one huge hand around her throat. He picked her up, jerking her into the air so suddenly that she dropped the knife she had drawn second. He caught her wrist and squeezed until she dropped the first knife.
"Drake!" Speedle snapped, drawing up short.
Drake dropped her again with a flick of his wrist that sent Cassandra staggering into Adams arms.
"Whats going on!" Speedle snapped "Why are you both so paranoid all of a sudden?" he asked.
Cassandra was gasping as Adam reached around her from behind, as if hugging her. He held her so she couldn't move her arms.
"I'm just worried about some things, I'm hearing accusations you're a cop and I know you and Cass are close so I figure she would know if you wheren't who you said you where" Drake switched from enraged to calm so quickly that Calleigh got dizzy.
"Now I heard you got hurt, stabbed. Let me see" Drake shrugged.
Speedle sighed "I'm done with the games Drake" he shrugged as if non plussed by the question.
He was lying through his teeth, he was shaking and Calleigh could feel it through the hand she still had pressed to his back.
"Adam" Drake said, a single word.
The lanky man sneered again and picked Cassandra up bodily. At some point he had cuffed her hands together and he threw her, physically threw her into the water beneath the pier. "She cant swim" Adam said bluntly.
Speedle moved and Calleigh staggered as he pushed her backwards and ran for the water, diving in after Cassandra who had disappeared beneath the water. Calleigh drew her gun and made sure the men saw it.
There was a minute when Calleigh wasn't sure Speedle would come back, but he broke the surface, dragging Cassandra with him.
He had wrapped her cuffed hands around his neck and swam slowly for the ladder, pulling the almost unresponsive girl with him.
Calleigh ran to help and pulled Cassandra onto the dock as Speedle climbed the ladder.
"Okay, I believe you" Drake said brightly.
"What?" Speedle gasped raggedly, checking on Cassandra.
She groaned and coughed and grabbed his hand, clinging to it for dear life.
"I believe you aint hurt, you wouldn't have jumped in the water if you where hurt" Drake shrugged "She aint no one night stand though" he nodded at Calleigh.
"She's an old girlfriend…I was gonna formally introduce you two later….she could help us" Speedle lied quickly, on the spot.
"How?" Drake frowned.
"Just trust me, we want her around" Speedle told him "Look, let me take Cassandra some where away from…either of you…I'll come by later and we can talk. Right now though, I'm taking Cass away from Adam" Speedle stated, in no uncertain terms.
"Fine" Drake shrugged and spun on his heel, walking away into the darkness. Adam leered again, then followed.
"Calleigh help me get her up and walk us to the car, don't look back, as soon as we get in, drive us straight to the lab…you might want to call Alexx on the way" Speedle told her.
"For Cassandra?" Calleigh asked as she began to help the girl sit up.
"For me, I think I pulled my stitches and I don't feel so good" Speedle told her gravely.
Calleigh looked down and realised the puddle around Speedle was steadily darkening as blood filled the water from his clothes.
"Shit" she spat.
She coaxed Cassandra, who seemed dazed, to her feet as Speedle managed to stand on his own. Hunching over slightly, Speedle helped Calleigh with Cassandra who grew more sure footed with every step. However as they neared the car, Speedle began to stumble. "Tim?" Calleigh asked, her voice high with concern.
Speedle shook his head wordlessly as they reached the car. Calleigh unlocked the back seat and Speedle slid in, followed by a now wide awake but still soaked Cassandra. The girl raised Speedle's shirt and cursed as she saw the wound, the now broken stitches and the blood oozing out. Calleigh couldn't tell if there was a lot of blood or if the water made it seem so. Speedle was taking short sharp breaths and Cassandra gave Calleigh a serious look "He needs a doctor" she stated.
Calleigh slipped out of her jacket and handed it to Cassandra who immediately pressed it against the wound.
Calleigh climbed into the drivers seat and keyed the engine immediately.
She shot one last look at Speedle bleeding all over her back seat and stamped on the accelerator. The car shot forward and Calleigh spun the wheel, taking them out of the gravel covered parking lot. For the sake of the operation there was no back up any where near by, just in case Drake and his people where monitoring them.
Calleigh absently pulled her safety belt on and pushed the car out into the traffic of the road beyond, shooting out in front of a Mini. She turned the wheel and the car screeched right, the rear wheels starting to fish tail wildly before Calleigh could get it under control. She weaved in and out of cars, ducking into back streets and short cuts, shaking off any possible tails in the process, running one or two red lights when need be. In a matter of minutes she was outside the lab, yelling into her cell phone updating Horatio on what had happened.
Horatio and Alexx came charging out of the lab, Alexx heading immediately for the back seat. She yanked the door open and leaned in. "Timmy?" She asked, her voice fearful.
"I'm here, just about" Speedle told her through gritted teeth.
"Let me see it baby" Alexx said soothingly to Cassandra who held the jacket pressed to Speedle's wound.
The girl reluctantly yelling to Horatio "Can we take him to the hospital yet?"
"Not just yet Alexx" Horatio called back.
"Well damn it Horatio" she snapped "I can fix him up but if he's still gonna be on the case he's gonna need more than I can do with what I have" she told him, one hand pressed to Speedle's face, her thumb rubbing back and forth affectionately.. "Timmy can you walk at all?" she asked him.
"Yeah" Timmy gasped.
"Alright, then we're gonna get you up and walk you into the lab, alright?" she told him.
"If we have to" Speedle grunted.
Alexx told Horatio to help her pull Speedle carefully out of the car. They each lifted one of his arms over their own shoulders and supported him as they walked him through the lab. The headed directly for the locker room and lay him down on a bench and Alexx, having had the newly arrived Ryan fetch her kit as they passed him on the way in, went to work on closing up the wound yet again.
Speedle was awake this time and lay gasping in pain as Alexx sewed up the wound. "Sorry baby" she said, often.
Cassandra had mutely followed them through the lab, her hands still cuffed in front of her. She sat shivering on the bench as Alexx tended to Speedle, watching everyone through suspicious eyes. Calleigh brought her a blanket. Cassandra, I'm Calleigh. I work, used to work with Tim. You know him huh?" she asked.
Cassandra, her dark hair drying in loose, messy waves that would be loose curls if her hair was longer, nodded, looking up at Calleigh. Calleigh saw that her eyes where a shade of emerald green. "My brother used to hang out with Drake and every body…we where never as into the…protest stuff, as they where…I even knew Tim back when the guys where in college…Connor, my brother, he died about four years ago. He and I left home when I was really little, our parents where just…awful. We lived with some different people for a while one or two ex military friends Connor some how made…that's how come…with the knives" She spoke quietly, her voice laced with exhaustion. "I only stayed with the guys because I didn't know any where else I could go, you know?"
"How did you find out about Tim being a cop?" Calleigh asked.
"I saw the news actually. The boys don't watch TV, they think its evil, but I do…I saw the story about him dying…or, supposedly dying…I was confused because, they said his name was different, that he was a cop…I was sort of in shock so I never told the boys about it. Then a few weeks later, he walks into the bar we've been frequenting and he's saying he's Timmy Barlow. I got him alone and called him out and he realised I'd caught him out" She explained.
Horatio had been distracted with Speedle but now, retrieved a hand cuff key and crouched in front of Cassandra, unlocking the bracelets on her wrists.
"Cassandra? My name is Horatio Caine" he told her as he, with gloved hands, removed the cuffs.
He pointed to the CSI's as he spoke, "The lady seeing to Speedle is Alexx Woods, you met Calleigh, the tall one is Eric Delko and he, is Ryan Wolfe. We're CSI's, like Speedle was" he explained.
"Yeah, he's told me about all of you. Except him" she pointed at Ryan.
"I'm new" Ryan smiled, nodding.
"So what do you want from me?" Cassandra asked bluntly, "I'll tell you what I can but you should know, they never told me a when or where, not yet" she shrugged.
"You tell us what you can" Horatio stated.
"It's some kind of virus, a bio bomb. One grenade of this stuff would take out a whole shit load of people, at least a dozen blocks. As near as I know we have a couple hundred. The ones hit first will just…drop dead, literally, their hearts will just stop. Those a little further out…well its engineered to mutate so they'll get sick for a few hours before they die. But they wont seem it, something Drake did makes it look like nothing more than a mild fever…hundreds of people will die and doctors will think it's a flu epidemic" she said.
Horatio stared at her for a beat, taking in what she had said. "Is there an anti viral?" he asked, very quietly.
"Yeah. Drake's plan was ransom" she told them "Offering the cure for money, a lot of money" she ran one hand through her scruffy hair "it sounds like something out of a bad movie but I saw him test the stuff on a herd of horses on a farm. They dropped like stones, and the ones that didn't…they got sick like I said, it seemed like the flu…and something else happened. Something Drake didn't expect…it mutated, it became contagious…only for a short while, but it happened fast; a horse that hadn't been exposed at all was brought to a stable beside the one Drake was testing in…it go sick and died with twelve hours, and others too. Then after that it stopped spreading…but they still died" she sounded tired again. "The last couple of days, things have been weird, Drake's been…way more paranoid than normal…something's up" she shuddered under the blanket, pulling it tight around her. "He's scary at the best of times but lately, like tonight, sayin he was gonna let Adam at me…normally he beats the shit out of Adam for even looking at me wrong but the tonight…tonight he was like a different person" she looked up at Calleigh, "I know he'll go through with releasing the stuff but the way he's been…some body got in his ear, somebody's been workin him over to so he doesn't trust any body. And who ever it is has made him think better of Adam, normally he just tolerates Adam's presence but lately…" she shook her head again, then looked at Calleigh sharply, her eyes lit from within with a mischievous glint "That kiss was pretty hot" she grinned.
Horatio blinked, realising what Cassandra had said, then looked over at Calleigh, un characteristically speechless.
"Kiss?" he asked.
"We had to…to prove we where a 'couple'" Calleigh said quickly.
"Share the gossip baby" Alexx said, still kneeling beside Speedle, who had canted his head back to glare at Cassandra.
"We kissed" Calleigh said, her voice a little high "That's all we did"
"We had to, they would have hurt you Cass" Speedle said pointedly.
"I know, and I appreciate it, I just didn't realise there was so much-" she cut off as Speedle raised his arm above his head and poked her in the side "Ow" she snapped, but she was smiling.
"I'm supposed to go back later and meet Drake and everybody…and I had to tell them Calleigh was a contact" Speedle filled Horatio in.
"Well alright then people, we have…what, three hours?" Horatio looked at Speedle who nodded "Before he and maybe Calleigh have to go back out there so here's what we're going to do, Eric, you carry on processing what we got from the safe house, Ryan you help him out but first I want you two to help Speed get to the couch in the break room, I want you to have a couple of hours of sleep" Horatio looked at the CSI's as he said their names.
"Cassandra, I'm gonna process your clothes and hair, I realise you went in the water but you might still have some evidence on you…after that you can take a shower if you and we'll see about finding you some clothes to wear" he smiled kindly at the young woman.
"Calleigh, you'll keep an eye out for Cassandra? Until we can find somewhere safer to put you-"
"I'm not going into hiding, if I vanish all of a sudden, Drake will know something's up and he'll set the bio bombs off. I said I don't know when and don't but I wouldn't bet we have more than a week" Cassandra interrupted "I'll do what ever I can to help you out but I'm not disappearing"
"She's right, Drake'll panic" Speedle said as Alexx pressed a bandage over the newly re stitched wound and taped it in place.
"All right…well then in that case…stick with Calleigh…but right now, come with me and we'll get the processing done, alright?" Horatio grudgingly agreed.
Cassandra nodded. As she past Speedle she ruffled his hair in an affectionate, sisterly way.
Ryan and Delko slowly lifted Speedle and helped him walk out if the room. As soon as the door closed behind them, Alexx slid along the bench until she was barely inched from Calleigh. "Kiss?" The ME raised one perfectly plucked eye brow and smiled at Calleigh, "Baby, tell me every damn thing" she crossed her arms and got as comfortable as she could on the bench.
Calleigh gave her a serious look "Alexx it was for the job, it didn't mean anything" she shrugged, looking away and fussing with the end of her hair.
She looked back at Alexx who's face hadn't changed from that smile, that raised eyebrow.
"Alexx I'm not kidding. I'm not it wasn't a big deal" Calleigh all but snapped.
Alexx tilted her head a half inch to the side. "Alright!" Calleigh really did snap "Ohmygosh Alexx he's a really good kisser I swear to the lord if he hadn't have been holding onto me I woulda fallen right on my ass, my knees where weak!" Calleigh couldn't help the grin that broke over her face, nor the glowing blush that rose in her cheeks.
"Oh baby I always knew that there was electricity between you two" Alexx just smiled knowingly. "And I mean come on, he came to you tonight, sought you out…baby he's in love" she nodded to her self as if she had known all along and had just been proven right at last.
Calleigh rolled her eyes "Oh he is not" she gave Alexx a friendly shove.
"Yes he is. And so are you"
"Oh Alexx behave. It was one kiss. Okay, one incredible kiss but that doesn't mean we're in love!" she stood, walking over to her locker and pulling it open.
"Okay" Alexx stated "You tell yourself that, and while you do, I'll go see if that intense lookin kid needs anything" Alexx stood and gathered her kit together, striding out. As she reached the door she called back "Let me know the colour scheme for the wedding though because the Maid of Honour has to look her best"
"Who said you'd be maid of honour" Calleigh jokingly shot back.
"See, told you you're in love" Alexx said as the door closed behind her.
Calleigh sighed and opened her locker, reaching on for some cleaner, more comfortable clothes. She looked at the pictures she had pinned to the inside of her locker. They where of her family, of her childhood home, and of course, of her friends, Alexx, Horatio, Eric, Ryan and Speedle. There where a few group shots, and yes, one individual shot of Speedle, taken at a barbecue she had hosted at her house once.
In the photo, which had been taken by accident, Calleigh had been holding the camera casually and it had gone off by accident, Speedle was facing the camera directly but looking off to the left, frowning at something…Calleigh remembered, something Eric had said. His hair had grown long enough to be noticeably curly, he had that permanent five o'clock shadow, his eyes where just two black spots, as always, expressing more emotion than he ever had with his face. The photo was in black and white and looked vaguely artistic. Calleigh had kept it just for the sake of having but since the day of the shooting, since Speedle 'died' it had taken on new meaning, capturing in one click that certainsomething that made Speedle, Speedle. As Calleigh stared at it now, she found herself smiling, remembering that kiss. She rolled her eyes as she remembered Alexx's smug smile, but she couldn't help wondering if the case would require her to kiss Speedle again. And hoping that maybe it would.
