The shop was small, dark, and not very quiet, full of hooting owls and the occasional shopper come to purchase their chosen fowl. She sat alone, her amber eyes closed for the most part, save for when she heard a customer come into the shop. Then one amber eye would open as she silently regarded the witch or wizard carefully.
She had only recently been brought to the shop, having just finished her training as a wizarding owl. She had been so excited when she was chosen, since only the most promising owls were chosen for training. They were taught how to listen to their owners and how to use their inner magic to guide them where they needed to go. The shop had been busy the past day or so it seemed, quite a few young witches and wizards coming with their parents. She had heard talk of a place called Hogwarts during her training and had inwardly hoped that she would be bought by a student. Some youngsters that came into the shop were loud and boisterous. She was glad when they left, she wasn't that kind of an owl. She wanted someone quiet, someone who she felt comfortable with.
Finally, she saw a large man enter the shop with a small boy at his side. In the light that filtered in through the open door, his silhouette revealed a head of hair that reminded her of a fledgling's feathers messed by the wind. He came over to her perch, quietly talking to her, smiling at her, his kind eyes sad behind the glasses he wore. His body's frame was thin compared to most of the humans she saw entering the shop. He did not speak loudly to her nor laugh, but gently, timidly, put one one finger out and stroked her feathers.
She felt a surge of happiness she had never known before, and her amber eyes met his. She affectionately nipped at his fingertips, kissing them gently with her tongue. She heard him say, "I want this one," and knew that he was talking about her.
The large man he was with bought her, and a cage and he took her out into the sunlight. Squinting her eyes at her new master, who the big man had called Harry, she knew that she loved him with all her heart. She knew that she would be proud to serve him and that whatever he needed her to do that she would do it gladly. It was the best day of her life.
