"Ne, Naruto." The stars slowly turned above them, no brighter than lightning bugs, but far more constant in the wide empty blue. Darkness dripped upon the two ninjas in the warm summer night. They lay there as friends, rivals, teammates – equals, alone save for each other and the tremulous stars, which sang with the dull sound of grass humming. Blades, soft and sweet from gathering midnight dew, bumped against the legs tired from rushing. In the night, Sasuke's hair nearly blended into the obscure ground. Steady breathing reassured them both that they weren't falling into the gravitational ocean above, like fish returning after a high, ecstatic leap. "I love you."
