Kyo Somah lay on the roof, the black tar paper still warm from the cold February sun. Watching his breath mist in front of him, he reflected.
Being cursed made this day very difficult. If anyone outside his family tried to hug him today, he'd immediately turn into the orange cat he was destined to become. Well, better that than his other form….
"Found you!"
"GAH!" Looking over to where he had left the ladder, Kyo breathed a sigh of relief when it was only Tohru Honda, the girl they had taken in.
"What're you doing up here Kyo-kun?" She asked, sitting beside him.
"What do you think? Hiding from Kagura." Retorted the redhead, referring to his cousin who was possessed by the boar zodiac and madly in love with him. Glancing at Tohru, he blinked. "Shouldn't you be with Yuki?" He asked, mentioning his cousin and rival who was possessed by the rat zodiac.
Shrugging, the brunette looked at the stars that had just begun to peek out. "He seemed to be having fun with Momiji-kun and Haru-kun, so I let him be." Momiji Somah was possessed with the rabbit zodiac and Haru was the ox.
Silence swept in and Kyo studied Tohru. That past summer he had finally come to terms with his emotions about her, accepting the fact that even though he loved her, he would not force his fate upon her.
She turned back to him, still smiling. "Did you enjoy your gift Kyo-kun?"
"Hmm? Oh, yeah…." Even though Kyo wasn't lying when he said he loved the gift, he felt bad accepting it from her. Since Tohru's mom had died, she had a job to pay for school and anything else she or the family needed. Meaning anything she gave to them came out of her pocket.
"Uhhh….Tohru?"
"Yes Kyo-kun?"
He hesitated. She was always smiling! That was the one fact that made him stumble over his words every single time. "Umm…that day… after we first met…when you said that you loved the cat from the zodiac… did you really mean that?" As soon as he said it, Kyo turned his face away so he didn't have to see if she was mad or upset. He hated that.
"Of course I meant it!" As she continued, Kyo looked over. "Ever since my mom told me the legend I wanted to be born in year of the cat, not year of the dog like Shigure-san!"
"Oh…" Looking up at the stars, Kyo turned this over in his head. Being born as the cat had really made his life turn upside down. Especially with his…other form. But when Tohru had seen him like that for the first time, she hadn't run. She stayed by him and assured him that she would be there for him.
"Love."
"Hmm? What…"
"Do you believe in love Tohru?"
Looking up, Tohru smiled. "I think there's someone for everyone. Nobody should have to be lonely." With a sharp intake of breath, she clutched Kyo's sleeve. "Oh, look Kyo-kun! A shooting star!"
Sure enough, a streak of light glistened in the cat's field of vision.
"Make a wish Kyo-kun!"
And as the pair sat on the roof under the stars, Kyo Somah knew exactly what he wanted…
And it just so happened that it was already there, sitting with him on the roof.
