She Dreamt of Freedom
By: Darker Rain

She sat alone, contemplating ones own thoughts. Freedom. For uncountable number of nights she wished it. She needed it. She prayed for it.

And it didn't come….not until now.

Not until now as she lay among the flowers, listening to the sound of her heart beating. And what a sound it made. Thumping softly in rhythm with her shallow breathes.

The world seemed different somehow. The colors brighter. The air lighter. She felt the earth beneath her, and the stems of white flowers brushing against her skin. There was no Naraku hanging over her head. There was no longer a lifeless Kanna with a mirror that recorded her every move. There was just…just herself.

She could go where she wished. She could say what she wanted. And just to the wind, and the trees and the grass below her, she cursed Naraku's name. She cursed the abomination and she cursed the lives of all that allied with him.

And she cursed the poison traveling her veins. She cursed her weak body for giving up now…now when the only one to abuse it was herself. And she cursed the half-breed Inuyasha for failing to kill Naraku when he had the chances. And she cursed the beautiful sky that shone above her, reminding her that she wouldn't bask in its brilliance again.

She wondered, while running out of demons to damn, if this was to be her fate. A slow thought formed, that maybe death wasn't such a loathed thing. Could one do better? A field of flowers? A shining sun with not one cloud in the sky? Could one not be but joyful to die free….but miserable. Miserable to die utterly alone.

So she thought of him.

Of the silver haired demon that seemed to come into her life when she was most in need. In her mind, and in her deepest heart of hearts, she wanted him to save her again. She wanted the weakness. She wanted his help. And as she tilted her face, and those beautiful ruby eyes towards the warm sun, she asked one more thing of the gods. They'd been silent when she begged deliverance, and they'd been silent when she needed Naraku dead. But she believed, just this once, if she could be free, than they could be real.

And then he was there. Looking down upon her with an expression she couldn't read.

But she knew his heart. Yes. She knew his heart well. She read it in his actions, and in the golden pools of his eyes. She knew it in the softness of his voice and the sureness of his step. She knew that he cared.

So she spoke. Needing to know with more than his heart, that he was hers. And he answered, knowing there was no harm in the truth in the moment they shared.

Now was sure. She was sure in her death and sure in his love.

She smiled…

This is not my first fanfic or one shot...at least not under this pen name.
