Author note: I guess I should go ahead and make it clear that my Scout is my sister's character, and it is based on her.
I felt a bit uncomfortable when the boys started to stare at us. Scout and I stood at the top of the stairs, looking down at the remaining Manhattan newsies.
"Wow," one of them said. I saw Art standing over by Race, his eyes on me. I looked away and blushed.
Scout glanced over at me and laughed.
"C'mon," she said, grabbing my arm and dragging me down the steps. I smiled up at Art as he held out his arm.
"Miss Matthews," he said. I put my arm through his and he led me out of the Lodging House, Scout and Race following our lead.
"Has the dance already started?" I asked, glancing over at Art.
"Yeah, but it hasn't been long," he replied. I nodded as we walked down the streets, the sun setting in the distance.
"That's so pretty," I said, pointing to it. Art looked at what I was pointing at and nodded in agreement.
"And so are youse…" I bit my bottom lip and looked back at Scout, who sent me a funny smile.
We soon came upon the place I suspected this Medda person held her dance at, and entered. I wondered if Harlem was coming. Surely they wouldn't after the big fight.
Scout and Race slowly entered before us, and I sent a nervous look towards Art.
"I can't go in there," I said, beginning to walk away. Art held on gently to my arm.
"Why not?" he asked, pulling me back over.
"People are going to stare at me," I said. Art laughed,
"Only because youse are beautiful." I blushed and let Art escort me inside. The moment we stepped in I could feel a million eyes on me, and random whispers. I glanced shyly around at the people staring, and turned my gaze over to a specific person.
Spot stood in front of a table, wearing his dark blue shirt and red suspenders, his hat shoved in his pocket. His eyes were resting on me, and his mouth was slightly open. His eyes seemed to sparkle from here, and I could tell that he was amazed.
I turned around to runaway but Art caught me before I could get anywhere.
"It's okay," he whispered. "They'll stop staring soon." I looked up at him and turned back around. I clung on tightly to Art's arm as we looked around for Scout. People still seemed to be staring at me.
"She looks like a princess," a girl whispered.
"Who is she?" another asked.
"She's beautiful!" a boy exclaimed.
"Look at her eyes; they're breathtaking." I was stunned. People actually found me attractive? I never thought I was pretty, and I thought I wasn't nearly built like a seventeen year old. I looked away from the staring eyes as I seen Scout and Race sitting at a table.
"Hey," Scout said, smiling at me. I took a seat beside her.
"Hey," I said, with less excitement than her. I felt a bit down.
"Youse okay?" she asked. I nodded my head and stared down at the table. Art sat beside me.
There were boys and girls everywhere. Girls dressed in their fancy dresses, and boys wearing their best clothes; it was interesting, actually. I felt like I stood out. I glanced around the room and saw Jack standing beside his friend David.
A red haired woman then walked on the stage and people began to cheer. They seemed to really like her.
"Who's that?" I asked, pointing over at the woman.
"Oh, dat's Medda," Scout said.
"Oh," I said. So this was the famous Medda that everyone loves. She began to sing a slow song, and couples got up and began to dance.
"Wanna dance?" Art whispered in my ear. I glanced over at him, and took his hand in mine. He led me to the crowded dance area and placed his hands on my hips. I hesitantly placed my hands on his shoulders, and we began to sway with the music.
I soon saw Race and Scout walk up and begin to dance, Scout trying to keep her gaze away from Jack. I wasn't used to dances. I knew how to dance and all, but I've never actually attended one.
Art was actually a good dancer, which didn't surprise me much.
"Youse look beautiful," he said, looking down at me. I bit my tongue and looked away.
"Thanks," I muttered. My eyes wandered through the crowd, and soon landed on Splinter. He was sitting at a table by himself, a drink in his hand. I then looked over at the place Spot stood at earlier, and found him sitting at the table he had stood in front of. He was sitting beside Spark, talking to him, a drink in his hand.
The song soon ended and a faster one came on. I walked back over to the table, alone, and watched people dance. Art wandered off to talk to his friends, and told me that he'd be back earlier. I watched Spot get up and walk over to a little girl, probably about nine years old, and whispered something in her ear. Her eyes lit up and she took Spot's hand and the two of them walked out into the dance area, near my table.
Spot spun her around a few times, and they began to dance to the fast rhythm. It was cute watching Spot dance with a little girl; he actually seemed to be enjoying it. His gaze turned to me as he twirled the little girl around some more. He didn't look as mad as he was earlier.
The little girl giggled as she stepped on Spot's feet a couple of times. He didn't seem to mind, because he, too, began to laugh. The song soon ended and he bent down and kissed the little girl's cheek, her whole face turning red.
Scout soon joined me at the table and grinned over at me.
"Havin fun?" she asked.
"Loads," I joked, laughing slightly. Somebody cleared their throat, and Scout and I looked up to see who it was.
"Uh, Scout…do youse wanna dance?" Jack asked, blushing slightly. Scout smiled over at me and took Jack's hand as the slow song began.
Audience P.O.V
Scout looked away from Jack's eyes as he placed his hands on her hips, and her hands on his shoulder's.
"So," he said.
"So what?" Scout asked.
"So…How is yer night so far with Race?" Scout laughed slightly,
"It's okay. I'm having more fun than Sage is, though."
"Yeah, probably 'cause she's with tha wrong guy," Jack said, looking over at Spot, who sat at his table beside Spark. He looked a little lonely, considering he didn't bring anybody with him.
"So, who did youse come with?" Scout asked.
"Nobody."
"Really, why?"
"Because da goil I was goin ta ask came with one of me friends." Scout tilted her head, and felt her heart sink.
"Oh, I'm sorry," she said.
"Don't worry; I can see youse is havin a good time…"
"Me? Y-youse wanted to take me?" Jack blushed and looked away.
"Yeah," he muttered. Scout blushed. Now she had to admit to Sage that she was right about Jack.
"Why?" Scout asked.
"Because…I…I jus' wanted to." Scout shook her head,
"No, Jack. Why?" Jack took in a deep breath, and slowly let it out.
"'Cause I like youse, okay?" Scout smiled, and tore her eyes away from Jack's.
"Why didn't youse tell me earlier?"
"'Cause a goil like youse will never like a guy like me."
"Don't be so sure…" Scout said. Jack laughed slightly and sighed in relief.
"All dis time I thought youse only saw me as a friend."
"Same here," Scout said, blinking. Jack laughed and raised Scout's face to his, brushing his lips against hers.
Normal P.O.V
I watched Jack kiss Scout, and I couldn't keep the smile off of my face.
"Hey Sage!" Les said, standing in front of me.
"Hi, Les," I greeted him.
"I was wonderin if you'd like to dance with me." I laughed at him, causing him to blush.
"Of course I'll dance with you." Les and I walked to the dancing area, and we began to dance. It was cute, actually, because he was shorter than me. Les stepped on my feet at times, and apologized every time he did.
For most of the night I shared most of my dances with Art and Les, and one or two dances with Splinter. He actually smiled!
Scout would run up to me from time to time to check up with how many guys I've danced with. According to her she's danced with Race and Jack the most, and sometimes she'd dance with Blink and Mush.
I sat alone at our table and watched the couples walk to the dance floor for the slow song. I fiddled with my fingers and watched the ground. A hand suddenly appeared in front of my face.
"Care ta dance?" I looked up at Spot's blue-gray eyes, and then back at his hand. I took it, and he slowly led me to the dance area. From what I've observed, Spot mainly danced with the little girl, and I would be the second one he's danced with. He wrapped his arms around my waist, and I instinctively wrapped mine around his neck. He moved professionally with the music, and led the dance, what most boys are supposed to do.
"So, why did youse come with Art?" he asked, staring down at me.
"Well, nobody else asked me," I said. Hint, hint, idiot… "And besides, Art is attractive, sweet, funny…and most of all, romantic." Spot chuckled and shook his head.
"And dat's what youse see in a guy?" I shrugged,
"I didn't say that it's what I saw in a guy, I just stated my opinion about him. Art is actually the perfect guy, if you ask me." Spot didn't say anything; he just stared down at me. I looked away and watched Scout dance with Jack.
"Youse is strange, youse know dat?"
"Gee, thanks."
"No, not in a bad way…" Spot trailed off. I looked back up at him. He was so close to my face; I could literally feel his breath.
"In one of da best ways youse could ever imagine." He then leaned in closer…
Next chapter: I don't know what's happening in the next chapter, so you just have to wait with a cliffhanger. But you don't have to wait too long, because I like updating, and I think I might write the next one tonight. Later!
