There! Now if that doesn't work then I give up.
I went to bed early, trying to figure out what the hell Spot was talking about. Clearly he's lost his mind. I pulled the sheets closer to me as I closed my eyes and tried to sleep, but I just couldn't.
"Urgh!" I got out of bed and walked into the washroom, splattering water onto my face. I stared at my reflection in the mirror, wondering: "why me?" I wiped my wet face off with a towel and returned to my room, flopping down into my bed.
Friends can always be much more... I couldn't get that sentence out of my head. What did he mean by that? I stared up at the ceiling when I heard glass breaking right outside my window.
I shot up out of bed, and cautiously walked over to my window. I peered out, but there was nothing there. I bit my bottom lip as I slipped out of my door and down the stairs. I was still wearing my clothing, because I still couldn't find anything to sleep in.
I creaked open the front door and walked out; well aware of the danger that could be lurking around. I was being an idiot right now. How stupid of me to walk out in the middle of the night with no assistance. It was dangerous for a girl to walk the streets of Brooklyn at night. I walked over to the side of the building.
I looked up and saw my window, and walked forward. Something crunched underneath my foot and I felt a sharp pain pierce it. I quickly stepped back and looked down at the broken beer bottle. Okay, stupid idea to walk outside barefooted.
I then saw a shadow cast upon the wall, and cautiously walked towards it. I peered around the corner and felt my heart beating rapidly against my chest.
I wrinkled my eyes as something walked out of the shadows. It was barely taller than my ankles, and stared up at me.
"Aw," I said, picking up the puppy. I didn't know what kind of dog it was, but it was adorable! It rested in my arms and stared up at me with big brown eyes. I rubbed his head and couldn't help but smile.
I then saw a light turn on in the boy's bunk room and quickly pressed up against the side of the building. I heard the window open, and then heard whispering.
"What did youse hear?" I heard somebody ask.
"I dunno, maybe somebody's tryin to break in!" came another voice. I rolled my eyes and saw the light turn on in my room, and then I could literally hear somebody running. I went back to the front door and opened it, waiting for somebody to try to beat me down.
The blood from my foot was drying to my skin, and I heard people yelling at each other. Somebody walked out and peered down at me.
"Here she is!" he said, pointing. All of the boys walked out of the room and looked down at me.
"Sage was tha one tryin ta break in?" asked a little boy. I giggled and felt the puppy squirm, a bit scared by the boy's presences.
"Where have youse been?" Spot's voice growled. He walked down the steps and eyed the puppy in my hands. "And why do youse have a cat?" I laughed,
"It's a puppy!" I said, looking down at it.
"So why do youse have it?"
"I heard something outside my window and went to check it out. It was him he whole time." Spot's eyes widened.
"Youse mean ta tell me dat youse went outside by yerself?" I shrugged,
"Yeah, so what?"
"So youse coulda been kidnapped and killed!" I rolled my eyes and rubbed the puppy's soft fur.
"Get rid of it," Spot said, glaring at the puppy.
"What?" I nearly screamed.
"I say's get rid of it?"
"Why?"
"Because I said so. Do I need ta have a reason?" I held the puppy closer to me and glared at Spot.
"We can't just put him back on the streets!" Spot rolled his eyes and grabbed the puppy from me and walked for the door.
"Spot!" I screamed.
"C'mon Spot, let 'er keep it," came Skip's voice. He stood behind me. Spot looked at him, and then at me.
"No," he said, opening the front door. I bit my bottom lip before running over to Spot and standing in front of him; blocking his way out.
"Move Matthews," he said. The puppy made a crying sound and looked up at me with sad eyes.
"No," I told him. "Let me keep him." I gave Spot a pleading look, and he looked away.
"A dog will only get in da way!"
"Please!" Spot glanced down at the puppy, and then up at me. He sighed in defeat and handed him over.
"Fine, keep 'em. But if he gets in my way den he's goin back out in da streets." I smiled at Spot before wrapping my arms around his neck and pulled him into a hug, making sure not to squish the puppy.
"Thank you, thank you, thank you!" I said, pulling away and petting the puppy's beige fur.
"Watchya gonna name 'em?" Skip asked, walking up and petting the dog. I began to think it over.
"Chance," I said. "Because Spot is giving him a chance." Spot turned away and walked upstairs, not looking back. Even though his back was turned to me, I could still feel him smiling.
All of the boys left, except for Skip. Him and I walked into the kitchen and I got Chance a bowl of water. I laid it down in front of him, and then laid down at piece of bread.
Chance ate the bread like he was starving, and then started on his water.
"Aw," I said. "He's so adorable." Skip laughed and petted Chance.
"Poor lil' fella was hungry," he said. After Chance had finished, I scooped him back up into my arms and walked back out into the foyer. Skip and I walked up the stairs and I bid him a goodnight before entering my room.
I laid down in my bed and Chance lay beside me. He instantly fell asleep, and a couple minutes afterwards I did the same.
The next morning I felt something wet on my face, and opened my eyes to find Chance licking my cheeks. I laughed and rose out of bed, yawning. I did what I usually do in the mornings and walked downstairs. I fed and watered Chance, and waited for the boy's to get up.
I heard somebody walking down the stairs, and Spot entered the kitchen.
"Good morning," I said.
"Mornin." Spot nibbled on a piece of bread and leaned against the counter.
"Spot?" I said. Spot looked over at me with his eyebrows raised.
"What?" he asked.
"Do you think I can find a decent job? You know, so you don't have to spend all of your money on me." Spot looked as if he were thinking this over.
"Youse could be a newsy," he finally said.
"Really?" I asked.
"Yeah, but it's a tough job. I'll show youse da basics," he said, throwing the remaining pieces of his bread over to Chance, who happily scarfed it down. Spot stood up straight and walked towards the front door. I glanced back at Chance, and then followed Spot.
Spot and I seemed to be the first ones at the distribution center. He walked up the narrow ramp, and knocked on the small window. The window opened to show a chubby man with a wild looking beard.
"Spot," he said, holding his hand out to Spot. Spot shook it and fiddled with the coins in his pockets.
"The usual I expect," the man said.
"Yeah, an' twenty extra for me friend here," Spot said, pointing over at me. The man smiled generously and yelled something at the young boys in the back. Spot laid down some coins as the man passed papers to him. Spot turned to me with a smile and handed me some papes.
"So Conlon, teach me," I said, following him out into the busy streets of Brooklyn.
"Well, foist of all, youse hafta know how ta lie." Spot scanned the headline.
"Mayor steals food from local vendor!" Spot screamed, holding the paper up. I looked down at one of my papers, and read to myself: "Mayor signs bill for food stamps." I gave Spot an odd look, and he merely grinned back.
"Mayor gets caught with a prostitute!" I yelled, making sure to say it clearly. I laughed at myself as a couple of young men ran up and bought a couple of papes. Spot watched in amazement.
"Youse jus' sold more den me!" he said, his eyes wide. I shrugged and smiled. Spot shook his head and continued to sell his hundred papes.
"I'll buy a pape for a kiss," a male said. I turned around and smiled. I stood on my toes and pecked his cheek.
"Good enough," he shrugged, handing me a penny and taking one of my papes. Spot glared at the guy as he walked away. I smiled over at Spot, who glared at me as I sold a couple of more papes.
It was long until I had sold every one.
"Guess what?" I said to Spot.
"What?" he asked, selling a pape to a woman.
"I sold all of my papes before you did." Spot glared at me, and yelled out another false headline.
"Good for you," he said. I followed him as he walked up beside a vendor.
"So Conlon, how long will it take you?" I asked, making him a bit irritated.
"Go bother someone else," Spot said, watching a few young girls walk up to him.
"G'mornin ladies," he tipped his hat. I crossed my arms over my chest and rolled my eyes as the girls giggled. Each of them handed Spot a penny, and he generously passed them papers. The girls smiled and whispered to each other about how "cute" or "handsome" Spot was; and how "strong" he looked.
I couldn't help but to laugh. It was actually very funny, but then again I felt like shooting each of them. Spot gave them one of his fake smiles, and the girls giggled again.
"Ahem," I said, grabbing their attention. Spot raised his eyebrows as I looked down at his papes and then back at him.
"Oh, right. Sorry ladies but I have work ta do," Spot said, bowing slightly. The girls couldn't stop giggling and walked away. I glared intently at their backs until they were out of sight.
"Aren't you the real ladies man?" I snapped. Spot shrugged,
"Nah, dat's Mush. I ain't been with but one goil me whole life." I raised my eyebrows and brushed past him.
"Where youse goin?" he called out. I merely shrugged my shoulders and kept on walking. I decided to take a walk and wait for Spot to finish selling. I walked by an alleyway, when I heard someone crying. I walked into the alleyway, and peered around the corner. There was a man pushing a woman against the wall, a knife at her throat.
"Now tell me, where is he?" the man asked, his voice sending icy chills down my back. The woman let out a small cry.
"I don't know!"
"Liar!" he said, slapping her across the face. If my feet weren't frozen to the ground then I would've helped her, but fear swam through me. The woman let her tears fall as she wiped at the blood on her cheek.
"If you don't tell me then I'll kill ya!" The woman shook her head.
"Never! I'll never tell you!" I couldn't run. For some reason I stayed where I was, watching. The man growled in anger and began to beat the woman with a chain that he grabbed out of his coat. The woman let out cries of pain as she laid on the cold hard ground. I bit my bottom lip and held back my own tears.
The woman tried her best to fight back, but the man was way too strong. He kept on lashing at the woman with his chain. The woman had blood all over her, but she was still breathing.
The man pulled out his knife and held it to the woman's throat as he began to…rape her. I closed my eyes and watched him finish her off by dragging the blade of his knife across her throat. The woman stopped breathing and lay dead. I let out a small whimper, and the man's head shot up. I gasped as he looked straight at me.
He gripped his knife tightly in his hand and stood up. I turned around and ran. I could hear his footsteps behind me as I ran out of the alleyway and towards the Lodging House. I could feel the tears strolling down my face. I glanced behind me and saw that the man was gone. But that didn't keep me from stopping.
I ran into the Lodging House and ran straight into someone. I looked up at Skip, and he stared down at me.
"Are youse okay?" he asked. He grabbed my arms and tried to calm me, but I was shaken up.
"No, no…no." I couldn't stop saying no. The woman had said that over and over again as she was being raped. I tried to pull myself away from Skip, in fear that he might try to…do what the man did to that woman. I heard the door open. Skip looked up as he still held onto me.
"No, no, no," I said again, letting more tears fall down my face. I was instantly pulled away from Skip, and looked up at Spot. He was glaring daggers at Skip.
"What do youse think yer doin?" Spot growled, holding onto me tightly. I pulled away from Spot and ran upstairs to my room.

Spot immediately pushed Skip against the wall and held his cane at his neck.
"Hey, I didn't do anythin to 'er, she came in like dat," Skip said.
"Youse stay away from 'er," Spot said, his voice causing chills to run up Skip's spine.
"But I-"
"I said stay away from 'er! If youse ever touch 'er again den I'll kill youse; I swear it!" Spot then pulled away and punched Skip in the gut.

I laid on my bed, trying to control my crying. I heard a knock at the door. I didn't feel like answering it, so I stayed where I was. The man had saw my face, and he knew I had witnessed him murder that woman. And then the truth hit me…He was going to do the same to me.
Next Chapter: Sage comes face to face with the man she saw murdering a woman. Why didn't she tell Spot about this? What happens when the man attempts to do the same to her? Will someone be there to save her?
