Author note: Don't you just love me?
I stood in the doorway, watching Spot's departing figure. My lips tingled, and I felt a warm sensation swim through my body. I smiled to myself as I blushed uncontrollably.
Wait, where was Spot going? I then noticed that I was still under the mistletoe, and quickly moved away before anyone else accidentally stepped under it. I turned around and ran right into somebody.
"Sorry," I muttered. I looked up at Art who was smiling.
"I forgot ta give youse yer Christmas present," he said. Before I could protest, he pressed his lips to mine, and the feeling of Spot's lips vanished, and the warm sensation faded away. I pulled away and gave Art a surprised look. He looked confused.
"Uh, Sage, are youse okay?" he asked. I shook my head,
"Yeah, yeah, I'm fine," I lied. The truth was, I wanted him to leave, and I wanted Spot to be the one standing in front of me.
"Good," Art said, grinning. "'Cause I been meaning ta ask youse dis, but I was afraid…so, here goes. Sage, will youse be me goil?" I raised my eyebrows as Art's eyes pleaded me. I looked away and bit my lip. Truth was I didn't want to be his girl.
"I, um, can you let me think about it?" I asked, trying to smile, but failing miserably. Art sighed,
"Sure." He then turned away and walked into the main room. I looked around the room to see if I could spot anybody I knew. All I saw were unfamiliar Manhattaners. I shook my head and walked upstairs, and into my room. Chance ran up to me and barked lightly. I smiled and petted his head as I walked over to the window, and sitting on the windowsill. The fire that was in my fireplace earlier was out, and I shivered.
I saw a figure walking through the snow, and immediately recognized it to be Spot. He walked back and forth, as if he was waiting for something to happen.
"He does dat a lot," came a voice from behind me. I turned my attention to Scout who was watching her "cousin."
"What do you mean?" I asked, looking back out at him.
"Well, before youse came, every Christmas he'd wait out there for Madison, and den dey'd spend Christmas taking a long walk. I guess he's still waitin for her ta come back." I sighed.
"Who's Madison?"
"She was his goil. Dey were like, in love. I guess he still loves 'er." I tilted my head as Spot took his hat off and ran a hand through his hair.
"Will he come back in?" I asked. Scout shrugged,
"I suppose. C'mon, da party ain't alive without youse!" Scout said, pulling on my arm.
"Scout," I said. Scout gave me a questioning look. "Art, he, uh, asked me to be his girl…"
"Oh," Scout said. "What did you say?"
"That I would think about it. I don't really like him, and I don't want to hurt his feelings."
"So jus' tell 'em," Scout said, pulling me off the windowsill. I glanced one more time at Spot, but he wasn't there. The two of us walked down the steps as everyone talked to one another, and couples kissed under the mistletoe. Jack walked up to Scout and kissed her cheek.
"Heya, Sage," Jack greeted me. I nodded towards him and watched Wades walk into the foyer.
"Dinner is ready!" he announced. All of the girls went first and got their food, and I stood behind Scout. The two of us walked into the main room and sat down at the round table. I stared down at my plate of food like it was poisonous.
"Youse know, a feast like dis only comes 'round once a year," Scout said. I gave her a small smile and bit into my food. I then heard a bunch of boy's cheering, and looked over at what they were cheering at. Standing in the main room doorway was Spot and a red headed girl. Her hair was curled, and pulled back, and her eyes were a forest green. The girl blushed as other girls giggled and told her to kiss him.
I felt my heart skip a beat as the boys patted Spot's back and pushed him towards her. I sighed in frustration and hesitantly pecked her lips. The girl's cheeks now matched the color of her hair. But a peck wasn't nearly enough for her. She threw herself at Spot and crashed her lips against his. Spot's eyes grew wide as he stumbled backwards and he leaned against the doorway to keep his balance.
My eyes also grew wide, and my mouth hung open.
"Get a room!" one of the newsies shouted.
"Gees, any longer and he'll swallow her tongue!" I said furiously. Scout burst out laughing and nearly choked on her food. I felt anger rising in my body, and as soon as Spot was free of the girl, his eyes immediately traced over to me. His eyes were still big, and he looked like he was out of breath. I looked away from his eyes and tried concentrating on eating, but that was hard.
"Wow," Scout muttered. "Da goil jus' threw herself at 'em like his lips were irresistible." Well, to be honest, they were irresistible. My heart stung from the pain, and I held back the urge to punch the red headed whore! Scout noticed my silence.
"Youse okay?" she asked. I nodded and kept my eyes on my food.
"Heya Sage, youse gonna eat dat?" Racetrack asked me. I gave him a confused look, and shook my head. He grinned and took my plate, walking over to his buddies.
"Race could eat a horse," Scout laughed as Jack sat beside her. I sent them a fake smile and tried to keep my mind off of Spot. Did I actually think that our kiss meant something? I mean, it's the rules of mistletoe, so it couldn't have meant something.
"I'm…going up to my room," I announced, rising from the table. I walked into the foyer where I last saw Spot head to, and felt a bit…dizzy. I wobbled slightly, and bumped into someone.
"Sorry," I muttered, trying to find my way to the stairs. I began to walk up them, and my eyes immediately got blurry. I put my hand to my head, and made it to the middle of the staircase when I felt like I was getting ready to pass out. I blinked a few times to adjust my vision, but that only caused me to get a headache.
I then felt my eyes roll into the back of my head and went backwards down the staircase. I felt my body hit the stairs many times, but I felt so numb that the pain didn't even make a difference. My mind then went blank, and everything was dead.
Audience P.O.V
Everybody suddenly got quiet and still as Sage fell down the staircase and land on the floor. Nobody made any movement as pianist stopped and stared like everyone else.
"Oh my God!" Scout nearly screamed as she pushed past everyone and made her way over to Sage's body.
"Spot! Spot!" she called, as she knelt beside Sage. Jack held his breath as he watched tears course down Scout's cheek, and watched Spot run into the foyer. He pushed people out of his way and stared at Sage with wide eyes. He immediately ran to her side and picked her up bridal style.
"Someone get Dr. Grey!" he ordered before taking her upstairs.
Normal P.O.V
I awoke in my bed and felt a bit…dizzy. I rose out of bed and glanced around my room. It was dark outside, and a figure was sitting in a chair beside my bed.
"Spot?" I said, waking him. His head shot up, and he was immediately at my side.
"Yer awake," he said, wrinkling his eyebrows. "Dr. Grey said you'd be out until tomorrow." I tilted my head in confusion, and suddenly remembered falling down the stairs.
"What day is it?" I asked.
"It's still Christmas," Spot said, looking me in the eyes. "Youse only been out for thirty minutes."
"What happened to me?" Spot looked down and played with his fingers.
"Dr. Grey said youse haven't been eatin much…" It was true. I've been saving my money up to buy Spot's watch that I didn't have enough money to pay for food.
"Oh God, Spot, it isn't what you think!" I tried to explain. Spot shook his head and gave me a serious look.
"Care ta explain." I glanced at the watch, and then back at him.
"I was saving my money," I told him.
"Den why didn't youse come ta me? Youse know dat I would buy youse food. What were youse savin money for anyway?"
"So I could buy a special person a special gift," I told him.
"Yeah, well, sometimes health comes before love." I sighed and closed my eyes. I didn't love Spot…did I?
"Is the party still going on?" I asked.
"Yeah," Spot said, looking away.
"She's pretty, you know…" I said.
"Who?" Spot asked, giving me a confused look. I tried smiling.
"The redhead; she's pretty." Spot chuckled and glanced at the wall.
"Well, she ain't the prettiest," he said. He closed his eyes, and I knew he must've been thinking about Madison. I sighed and stared up at the ceiling.
"She seems to like you."
"Youse think?" I laughed slightly, and looked away. I craved his lips, but I wasn't about to tell him that.
"Maybe…you should go back downstairs," I said, fiddling with my necklace. Spot smiled and stared at me.
"Well, I'll go if youse go," he said. I sighed and pushed the sheets off of my body. Spot helped me out of bed, and I felt a bit dizzy.
"Whoa," I said. "Spot…you have a twin!" Spot laughed and made me put my arm through his so he could help me. We steadily walked downstairs, and I saw a certain little red head glaring at me. I tightened my grip on Spot's arm when I almost fell forward. Spot steadied me as we continued down the steps.
"Sage!" Scout screamed, wrapping her arms around me and choking me.
"I thought youse were dead!" she screamed.
"Uh, Scout, I, uh, think she can't breath," Jack said trying to pull Scout off me.
"Not now Jack, can't youse see dis is a friend moment!" Scout screamed.
"Scout…can't…breath!" Scout let go of me.
"Oh, sorry," she said, grinning. I gave her a quick smile before leaning on Spot for support.
"Youse okay?" he whispered in my ear. I looked up at him and nodded.
"Good, 'cause I wanna take youse somewhere." Spot then led me towards the front door, and the both of us walked out into the snow. It was still snowing, and I shivered as the snow hit my cheeks. Spot placed a jacket around my arms, and led me out into the empty streets. We began to walk in silence, and I felt a bit uneasy. For some reason, I needed to tell Spot about the murderer.
"Where are we going?" I asked, shivering a bit. Spot smiled.
"Youse will see." I sighed and walked beside him to only he knows where. I brushed some hair out of my face and looked over at Spot. He had a calm, relaxed look on his face as he walked beside me. I wrapped the jacket tighter around my arms and Spot came to an abrupt stop.
"Where are we?" I asked. Spot smiled down at me, and then entered a building. I hesitantly followed, and found the place to be very beautiful decorated for Christmas. There were tables with couples sitting and eating, and others dancing.
Spot led me over to a table, and pulled a chair out for me. I sat down and he sat opposite of me. As if on cue, a waiter walked over and laid plates down in front of us. There was chicken, potatoes, corn, and a lot of other good stuff. I gave Spot a questioning look, but he only responded by…eating. I looked down at the food in front of me and shrugged. I picked up my fork and ate.
It was very peaceful as people danced to the slow and fast music, and couples gave each other expensive gifts. I glanced up at Spot who was watching the people dance. He blinked a few times, as if he was taking in their every move.
I then noticed Abigail, and she immediately ran over to Spot.
"Spotty!" she said, giving him a long, sweet hug. I smiled as Spot hugged her back.
"Hey there, pretty goil," he said, kissing her cheek. Abigail blushed and giggled, and then she noticed me. She grinned and hugged me.
"Sage!" she said. I hesitantly hugged her back and glanced over at Spot.
"What're you doin here Spotty?" the little girl asked.
"Well ta dance with youse o'course," Spot said, rising from his chair and walking Abigail out onto the dance floor. I smiled as Abigail danced gracefully, her hair swaying beautifully. I tilted my head and watched Spot laugh as he twirled her. Spot actually looked nice, for once. He didn't look like he was getting ready to kill somebody.
The song soon ended and Spot kissed the Abby's cheek once more and walked back over to me.
"How do you know her?" I asked, smiling. Spot took his hat off and fanned himself with it.
"I dunno," he replied. "But I've known her for awhile." He then glanced at the dancing area, and then back at me. "Wanna dance?" Without waiting for an answer I was pulled to the dance floor as once of the fast songs came on.
Spot lead me into a free style dance, as he twirled me around, and danced regularly at some points. He pulled me close to him and I put my hand in his and the other around his neck, and his other around my waist. We swayed in a fast/slow motion to the music, and then I was twirled a few more times as my skirt flowed with me, and we came to a stop. Spot was grinning as the both of us tried to catch our breath.
We returned to our table to rest, and Spot leaned back in his chair.
"Youse know, I've never dance with a goil who could keep up with me," he said. "All my other friends don't dance." I tilted my head at the word "friends," and I guess it answered the question I had been dying to ask all night.
The kiss meant nothing.
Next Chapter: Wanna know what happens next time? Yeah, so do I. I don't know what's happening next, so let's all be surprised, shall we?
Author note: Well, I hope this chapter didn't seem a little stupid, but now we know, or we think we know, what the kiss meant.
