It made her sick, truly it did.
A black figure amongst the sea of pinks and reds, she stood out without flowers wrapped in plastic or bears with bows or velvet jewelry boxes. Blond hair fluttering out of its clip, her head didn't turn as she passed all the glowing faces. Store windows glittering with heart-shaped sequins and kisses everywhere she turned, she was terribly left out.
But no, nobody wanted to love someone who slept with the dead in their bedroom. And after all, the dead always dampened the mood.
Always.
Wrapping the fronts of her coat tighter around herself, she stepped into the coffee shop not half a block away from where Philly's finest were sipping fruity red punch and enjoying pink-foiled chocolates.
Paper cupids hanging over her head, she poured milky white creamer into her coffee cup, watching as it swirled away into the dark liquid. Not even flinching, she watched as brown droplets stained her napkin as she stirred the steaming liquid mindlessly.
Stained. Tainted. That was what she was-poor, damaged goods, nothing compared to an opulent creature that her sister was. Nobody wanted to love the cold-hearted ice queen of cold case row.
Only until a black figure amongst the sea of pinks and reds slid into the seat across from her did she look up, face emotionless save for her eyes.
Such sad, haunting blue eyes, he thought. After all, nobody really wanted to love someone who dwelled in old memories. And Lilly was nothing but wrapped up in the past.
But nobody, Scotty thought as he placed a crimson red rose between her surprised hands, didn't include him.
