Disclaimer: I don't own Stargate SG-1 (except for about forty DVDs and ten books) and I made no money from this fic.

Burdens

It was strange, really.

Cameron had gone through so much, seen so much death, and now here he was. Head of SG-1, going boldly where no one had gone before. And more often than not, getting his ass kicked black and blue in the process.

But to begin with, he felt out of place. Disjointed. Out of sync with the flawless movements of the other three of his team. It had helped a little that General Landry was new as well; they were in the same situation.

But…

It wasn't the same situation. At all. Landry was in total command of the base, but Cameron wasn't – he didn't have the same support.

But still he had had to cope. He was the New Guy, and all New Guys had to cope.

He had had to fight so hard to reunite SG-1, with Sam, Daniel and Teal'c saying their goodbyes to the SGC. He had had to fight for his life, and the weight of the galaxy was held by him and his team.

But now, he was the happiest he had ever been.

Sure, there were downsides. Of course. The major one being putting your life on the line every day, whether on this world or on another. His life had rapidly come to revolve around the base and his team, to the point of excluding most other things, and a social life…?

Some things were hard. Like reliving the worst moment of your life over and over and over and over again. Like not being there for one of his best friends when he died, when he could have been stood beside him, holding his hand. Like realising that a man had given his life to save a planet that had destroyed itself barely a week after he had been taken by the ol' man with the scythe.

Some things were hard, but life's like that.

He had the weight of the universe on his shoulders. Not quite literally, but…

Tension and stress were now common factors in his life. At least, they had been before, but now they were in greater quantities. Much greater quantities.

But hey.

When it was shared between four of you…

The burden wasn't nearly as heavy.
