Away and Away

It was cold that night,

Much colder than usual.

-

The air was still and breathless

In the stifling cold

As she walked out into the dark.

With a gasp,

The heat was sucked from her being,

As if the night couldn't stand

To be reminded of it's blazing rival.

But it was all right,

She felt neither heat, nor cold.

-

She knew not where she was going,

Only what she must do.

She trecked on, through the chilled and eery calm,

Eyes locked into the black ahead.

The stars' sharp gaze held her firm,

Their judging eyes forseeing what was to come;

Though they dared not look into the past,

In fear of being swallowed by the dark

In which they lie.

-

The hours passed like minutes,

And yet the sun made no appearance.

-

She held strong,

Her emotions neatly tied,

And kept on walking through

The landscape of sorrow and grey.

She tilted her face up to the sky

And watched knowingly

As a star shivered and fell.

-

Her relentless pace came to a slow halt,

And she turned her frigid face

To the abrupt absence of land.

A gorge, stretching forever and a night,

Gaped before her.

Her fingers twitched and a sluggish warmth

Spread through her.

And then her feet left the earth.

-

And once again, her face was to the sky.

Watching the dark slate lighten

As the soft tendrils of the east

Seeped across the sky.

She closed her eyes then

As the final star of night fell.
