Chapter 1: Food for Thought

It was a Friday afternoon at the Tipton. Business was going great and all of the guests were comfortable. Carrie Martin walked in through the entrance of the lobby doors with her twin sons, Zack and Cody. The three people walked in to see a very excited looking blonde girl at the candy counter.

"Hi Maddie. You look happy today." Carrie said with a smile.

"I am!" Maddie said. "I just found out that I got accepted into this really great program at Harvard this summer!" She waved a large white piece of paper in the air.

"Ahh, beauty and brains…what more could a guy ask for?" Zack said leaning over the counter.

"Yeah…too bad they're both seven years older than you." Maddie said with a smile.

"That's not a problem…sweet thang." He winked.

Maddie rolled her eyes.

"That's really great Maddie. We're very proud of you." Said Carrie.

"Thanks, I worked really hard to get in, I'm the first person in my whole neighborhood to get accepted."

As Maddie finished, a thin-framed, dark-haired girl came out of the elevator talking on a cell phone.

"I still can't believe my dad cut my budget again! Yeah, I can only spend $2000 a day. I know! He's ruining my life! Well, I'll talk to you later." She hung up the phone. "Hey, what's all the excitement about?"

"London, congratulate Maddie, she got accepted into a summer program at Harvard!" Carrie said. London gave Carrie a blank stare.

"Okay." London said.

"Okay? Is that all you can say? Harvard is one of the best schools in the world!" Cody explained.

"Actually, I think my school is the best…only because…I go there!" London grinned.

"London, Harvard is a college a few miles away from here. It's going to be so interesting…studying law, hanging out on the campus…meeting cute college guys!" Maddie smiled.

"Oh! That sounds like fun! I wanna come too!"

"Uh, London, you kind of have to pass this test and get good grades." Cody said.

"I pass all of my tests and I always have good grades! Daddy gives me $200 for every 'C' I get! I'm doing pretty good!"

"Well, you kinda have to have more than just…a 'C' average." Maddie said.

"Okay…what does that mean?"

"Um, no offense, London, but…you have to be well…smart." Zack chimed in.

"I am smart. I beat Maddie in chest!"

"That's chess," corrected Maddie. London frowned. "Don't get me wrong, I know you're smart…but I'm just a tad bit smarter."

"Oh yeah? You think you're smarter than me? Well newsflash…I can be smarter-er!" London spat back as she walked away quickly.

"Well, that was interesting." Carrie said. "Let's go upstairs guys." She pushed the backs of Zack and Cody and led them to the elevator.

"Bye you guys!" Maddie called out. She took one last look at her admittance paper and smiled.
