Chapter 1: The Accident
"Please don't' let her die," Tianna Moore whimpered, pushing her damp red hair away from her swollen tear-covered face.
She was huddled on the side of the road, feeling frantic and helpless. A few feet away three EMT workers were wrenching the passenger-side door off her vintage BMW. Serena Killingsworth was stuck inside.
Tianna had been driving Serena home from Jimena Callisto's party when an oncoming car veered into their lane. She'd swerved to avoid a head-on collision, but her reaction totaled the car.
The crash had happened in an instant, but to Tianna it seemed as if the sound of crumpling metal and shattering glass and screams-Serena's scream, her screams-had gone on for hours. She'd had plenty of time to realize she was dying.
But she hadn't died.
She awakened to new terrors.
When she came too, Tianna had discovered Serena slumped forward, the passenger-side door crumpled against her. Blood was trickling out of her mouth. She'd seemed entirely lifeless.
Serena. Her friend. Collin's sister. Stanton's girlfriend.
The EMT workers removed the door, and Serena's motionless form was exposed to the rainy night. Tianna closed her eyes to block out the frightening scene, but in her mind's eye she saw something just as horrifying: the car that had run them off the road driving away moments after the crash. Leaving her alone even though her friend might be dying.
The car had a familiar Jaguar. Her father.
Why does it have to be like this? Tianna thought helplessly. Her father was responsible for this nightmare and he'd been too much of a coward to stick around and admit what he had done. He'd obviously been too drunk to recognize his own daughter's car, and then speed away…
After her father had deserted her, Tianna had waited-again for what seemed like hours-before a white Honda had come slowly down the road through the rain. Seeing the wreck, the woman had pulled over immediately. A stout woman wearing a beret and oversized glasses had emerged and taken over. She'd called 911 on her cell phone and hadn't left Tianna's side until the emergency workers arrived. Then she'd mumbled something about being late and drove off. Tianna didn't even know her name.
Now, as Tianna watched the EMT workers stepped away from the car and began to talk earnestly. Tianna had promised them she'd stay back, but she couldn't stop herself from rushing forward. "Don't just stand there-get her out!"
One of the EMT workers came and put an arm around Tianna. "We're doing everything we can. The best thing you can do fro friend is stay calm."
"But what if she dies?" Tianna asked hysterically. What if she dies, and I'm the only one that knows who did it?
