III

The darkness is scary, at first. It gives even her teddy bear shadowed eyes that follow her across a room. But the worst effect is on V.

It transforms his mask into a leering skull, with Medusa's hair and empty eyes that could freeze her until she shivers.

The darkness doesn't seem to bother him, in fact, she is sure he revels in it. The single bulb in the main room is dim and there are no candles to be found.

But it takes the cover of darkness to appreciate his strangely charming mannerisms. She discovers that he is most himself when he can't be seen, though she hears him singing softly to himself, feels the brief touch of her hand in his, senses the caring gazes bestowed on her despite his ghastly appearance.

All these things are permitted only in darkness; so she learns to revel in it, too.
