Prologue
He held the smooth golden object in his hand as he gazed into the eyes of his companion, watching as her shoulder length golden blonde hair blew into a mass of curls on both sides of her head. He found himself smiling at the sight, her heart-shaped face facing him with evident vitality as she aimed towards him the greatest smile she could muster. He exhaled sharply, knowing that the decision he was considering to make would one day play a major role in his life.
Mussing the top of his thick ebony hair, he forced himself to smile sheepishly as he faced the younger girl once more. He straightened out his fingers from the palm of his hand, revealing the glittering object he had formerly kept hidden from view. "Hey," he said, immediately capturing her attention, "did you know? When this star locket plays for two people, they'll live happily ever after."
She fingered the item curiously, the still smile on her face broadening greatly. "Really?" she inquired, her hand reaching for the object, her petite fingers wrapping themselves around his in the process.
A palpable melody filled the air, circling the two young children in the playground, only to advance forward and radiate through the whole of the park. The young girl fixated her eyes on the tiny article, watching as the illuminating moon in the core of the star-like structure rotated as if in a never-ending cycle. Her eyes grew wide and once again returned to the older boy beside her, who appeared to look equally astonished.
He smiled modestly, his face radiating as much excitement as the younger girl's beside him. "Yeah," he replied, despite the fact that his point had already been confirmed by the melodic object she now held in her hand. "I want you to have it," he finally stated, his eyes remaining focused on the ground, "to remember me by..." He waited for her reaction, wondering if everything he had just said sounded as asinine as he felt.
To his amazement, she offered him a kind smile, her eyes twinkling with enthusiasm and her cheeks tinting with even more vigor. "Happily ever after...," she reiterated, not understanding the complete extent of the words, or the importance they brought. "I'll treasure it forever," she responded, her small arms immediately circling his waist. "Thank you!"
A scarlet hue spread across his cheeks, and he suddenly found it impossible to breathe. Before he could formulate a single reply, her tiny rose-tinted lips pressed against one of his already-flushed cheeks, the act leaving him completely short-winded. He parted his lips, prepared to declare to her how much (although they hadn't known each other long) he cared for her (and how much he'd miss her over the time period she was away), but he could not seem to place the golden-haired angel anywhere.
"Goodbye, Mamo-chan," she called, causing him to double over as he finally realized what was happening. "One day, I'll give you back the star locket, and then, we'll live happily ever after."
He watched the blithe girl smile at him once more, tiny strands of golden thread fluttering with the breeze, and his hand immediately grazed over the warm cheek she had last touched. Brushing a trickling tear escaping his eye, he reached toward a scintillating object in the sand, prepared to make his way back to the austere, barren building he had escaped from.
'One day...'
Thank you for reading (if you actually read all those notes that were larger than the story itself). I know it isn't much yet, but that was the prologue, kind of like a teaser. The actual story, knowing me, will take up much more room than any of my author's notes. If you have any comments, questions, and concerns, please let me know. Oh, and review!
Edit: FFN kind of massacred my summary, so I had to shorten it. The full one can be viewed below (to give you a gist of what the story really is about).
