Dark Redemption

Chapter One

The night is not a friendly place for me, I prefer the day because memory lane is sweeter than the haunting memory of my best friend, Lizzie McGuire's lifeless body cradled in my arms. I make a left hand turn, and then pull into the hotel, I'm staying at tonight.

After I pulled my keys from the ignition, I just sat there in my jeep and took a deep breath. I wasn't ready for the confrontation that would be taking place the next day. I don't mean with Jo McGuire either, I mean the whole town of Hillridge. I don't think I'm ready for the staring, whispering behind my back, the cruelty that will come with me: coming back home.

I shook my head and then slammed the door. I didn't care if it awoke anyone, I just wanted my room key, so I could rest my tired eyes. I finally got my room key. I get to my room and wouldn't you know its' room number: 352. I wonder if its some kind of joke. The month, day, year, displayed on my door. The day it all started. I opened my door and went straight to the bed.

"Gordo, I love you." whispered Lizzie McGuire.

"I know you do, but I'll only be gone for an hour tops," he sighed and took in her beauty. The pale of her complexion, her tasseled blond hair, and the way her hazel eyes lit up; when she got excited. And how she only called him Gordo when they were alone. "I'll be back. Just don't answer the door."

He got dressed and left without looking back. He knew if he looked back; he wouldn't be able to make money for the rent.

"All right. I'm coming!"

I rolled out of bed still in my groggy haze. I couldn't believe I had dreamed of Lizzie again. At least it was almost before my past caught up with me. I answered the door and received spit in my eye.

"How did you know where I was?" I asked as I could finally see clearly again.

"I know it's the anniversary. I figured you'd be back and break your promise. You couldn't stand to hurt Jo; after she gave you and Lizzie your blessing of acceptance."

I was still blocking the door. I couldn't let her inside; she would ruin everything; I've tried to block out. The phone call, her last breath, the grocery story, and so much more.

"I have to get more sleep and I'll be back in Hillridge at nine o' clock. I'll see you and Jo later."

I went to shut the door in her face, but she put her foot in the door way.

"I miss her too, David."

I glared at her, I needed my sleep damn it.

"Good bye, Miranda."

And then I slammed the door in her face. I crawled back into my bed and as I could see the sun peek over the horizon, I closed my eyes and wished my life had been different. Lizzie would still be here and so would the baby.
